How can I keep program info from EPG for show saved in library?

A show I am recording through DVR has the correct metadata in the EPG guide, but the wrong data in my TV library. I’d like to keep the EPG data, how can I do this?

I live in Boston and record a local news program by WCVB called ‘Chronicle’. The correct metadata appears in the Electronic Program Guide with the correct description of the show.

After the show, the programs appear in my TV Library, but they have the wrong data. The agent appears to be matching the show to another program called ‘The Chronicle’.

Is there any way I can tell Plex DVR to use the data from EPG for this particular series when it was recorded instead of looking up the info from thetvdb.com?

Edit the library where you store the recordings.
What is set as agent in the “Advanced” tab?
This is what is used to match the recorded file, which can go wrong quite often.

Now changing that Agent setting is quite easy.
HOWEVER:
there are some trade-off’s you need to be aware of before you do it:

  • items which are already in the library can get affected by the change. So older recordings can lose almost all metadata after the change.
  • In general, I recommend you to keep ripped/downloaded and carefully curated media separated from DVR’d media. In a wholly separate library.
This is crucial for having a different metadata agent for recorded items.

So, try this:

  • create a separate folder in your file storage for recorded tv shows.
  • create a new library in Plex, type “TV Shows”
  • link the new library to the new folder
  • before you click on “Add Library”, go to the Advanced tab and change the Scanner to “Plex Series Scanner”. Then change the Agent to “Personal Media Shows”.

Now edit the recording task of this show in the DVR Schedule and change the “Add to Library” selector to the newly added library.
Wait until a new episode has been recorded.

In general, you should never perform “Refresh Metadata” on an item in this new library (nor on the whole library itself). Because after the episode has been aired, there won’t be any metadata source for it. (already aired episodes get discarded from the EPG)
Neither should you use Match or Fix Match.

Thank you for the detailed direction, I’ve gone ahead and made that change and will check future recordings. :grinning:

Reporting that this approach solved my problem, thank you.
