Recording failed. Please check your tuner or antenna

The 3rd time in 3 weeks that Plex has lost the tuner and nothing records. This is frustrating. I need to unplug the Shield, unplug the tuner, give it 30 seconds and then plug them back in again.

Again today, I had not recorded shows for 2 days and pulled the wrong plug - wanted to 1st pull the plug for the WinTV-dualHD and plug it back into the shield but pulled the power instead.

Interestingly, when the Shield powered back up the shows no longer showed as having failed to record because of Plex and instead would bring up a show from an earlier recording
Plex covering their a$$ or another bug in the system?

I want to record and play back. I want to be able to go back 10 seconds, 20 seconds 200 seconds and it just work. Work on the basics Plex and add the ‘fluff’ later!!

AND again !! A Selling point of the Plex Pass is that you can record Live TV but when you get a toast message on your TV that recording failed but it failed because of a conflict with another show you don’t give it a 2nd thought. However, when you see the message again, and again and again you think that there might be an issue. So you take a look and sure enough, the last 20 hours of expected recording hasn’t.

Get your priorities straight plex. Why do I have to restart my shield for to get this to work again?

And again last night. I was away for a month and wanted to make sure shows would record so I moved the WinTV-dualHD to my Windows machine and there was no issue, Plex worked fine.

Get home and move it back to the Shield and after 2 days kaput. Had to reboot.

@BigWheel, you’ve been of assistance on matters before, what’s going on and are the engineers at Plex even investigating the issue?

I’m not very knowledgeable about DVR stuff since I get crap reception where I am and can’t really use it. But I will make a report for this and get someone to take a look.

Interesting - WinTV-dualHD. I am seeing very similar misbehavior. Every 2 to 4 weeks my Plex decides that it can no longer access the device and I get a bunch of missed recordings. When I delete the DVR Plex still does not see the WinTV. But it returns after I reboot and add the DVR again.

So, no answers, but you are not alone.

I had about 2 weeks of successful recording then today I got the dreaded “check your tuner” failures again. I uninstalled plex and rebooted and when I tried to add dvr the Hauppauge WinTV dualHD was not listed. unplugged the hauppauge, rebooted, plugged in. Linux sees the Hauppauge in the lsusb listings A-OK. But plex will not show me this device to ADD DVR.

I have an HDHomeRun on the LAN. I do not wish to use that with this instance of plex. But it shows up on my add-dvr screen every time. I unplugged the HDHomeRun and rebooted again. VOILA! The Hauppauge WinTV dualHD finally appeared! So, is there a bug? If an HDHomeRun is on the LAN does Plex stop looking for locally attached Hauppauge devices? Seems to be the case.

@DrSmith interesting point about the HomeRun being attached. Thanks for that info for us to try to reproduce. @dzeff are do you also have a Homerun on the network?

Also can youu check if the USB drives are set to power off when shield goes to sleep. Should be in Settings → Device Preferences → System, at the very bottom under the heading USB Port Power./ Try setting it to Always on

@BigWheel - my setup is also different from dzeff. I am Ubuntu 20.04 (not Windoze) and I do not have any playback devices directly connected to this Plex server. The record duties are very light, typically 3 programs per day so there is a LOT of potential sleep time between but I’ve no idea if the Hauppauge/USB power pattern is doing this. I think it sleeps 22 hours per day, but the failure only happens every 2 weeks.

My /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/control is set to auto
My Hauppauge is Bus 001 Device 004: ID 2040:026d Hauppauge 955D
I don’t know how to set power to “always on” on Ubuntu, but will gladly try if you know the command line gyrations.

I edited /sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/control to “on”. I realize this will probably not survive a reboot. And it was a doc from 2014 that said this would work. I’ve no idea.

Oh sorry, I thought you were running server on Nvidia Shield too. Missed that you mentioned linux.

I know it is probably hard to be around and know about it right when it happens but if you can try to get your server logs right when you notice it gone it may help devs track this down.

@BigWheel , I hadn’t restarted the shield for a few days and sure enough, the antenna has been lost. Log files have been attached.

@BigWheel I have same issue here - Nvidia Shield and the WinTV dual tuner, except mine will crash almost daily. I’ll see if I can get a log. I finally got fed up enough with it to sign up for this forum. I’ve tried every setting I can think of. If it helps, the Shield and tuner were just purchased from Amazon in May and worked great for the first few weeks (long enough to convince me to buy the lifetime Plex Pass). I may try a factory reset and not update anything to see if I can get back to blissful DVR behavior.

One interesting observation is that the ‘live channels’ app will usually work even when Plex won’t. If I restart the Plex Server from within the Plex app, I can get the antenna back 9 times out of 10. The other time requires a reset as the server doesn’t even register in the Plex app at all. That one is
annoying.

Do you want debug or verbose logging on? Some forum threads request those be off.

Cannot find the antenna again this morning.

debug ON, Verbose OFF

And again this morning. I rebooted TWICE yesterday for the same issue, once even going so far as to unplug both the electricity AND the USB with the WinTV-dualHD. I have no USB hubs/extenders or anything plugged in so there is nothing else to get in the way. Just the electrical cord, the HDMI out to the TV, the Ethernet cable and the WinTV-dualHD.

You can see on the left side of the screen capture are files that recorded yesterday but it was < 24 hours before it lost the antenna again.

I know that the WinTV-dualHD is OK because when I had left for a month I set it up on a Windows machine and there were no such issues. In fact, I could even see the subtitles. Which has been an ongoing problem on the shield for years - Issues with Closed Captioning on Plex DVR recordings (not working).

@BigWheel , when will subtitles display in shows/movies recorded on the Plex DVR for the shield?

This issue is not platform or tuner specific. We have had this same issue for quite a while on a macOS server using three HDHomerun units on LAN. When it happens the tuners are shown in DVR Setup but are unavailable. Deleting a tuner to try adding it again doesn’t work, none of the tuners are discoverable in this state. To rectify the issue we reboot the machine running the server.

The symptoms may not be platform specific, but a network tuner dropping vs a directly connected one could be from different causes. I’d personally prefer to keep this troubleshooting to the Shield and WinTV tuner, but obviously I’m biased until proven otherwise!

This seems to be a restart of Plex Media Server at Sep 27, 2021 22:12:47 failed to get the Plex Tuner Service established with listening to tcp port 32600 because I suspect the earlier session had not released the port in time and shut down
