Recover password without changing it?

I am not locked out of Plex, but I am migrating to a different computer. As it turns out, I can’t find my current password because it’s all auto-populating.

From what I’ve been reading on here, changing my password causes a lot of complications. All of my connected devices, and potentially access to my synology server would be denied.

Is there a way to just recover the password I currently am using? Signing back in on my devices might be easy, but I’m not technically savvy enough to deal with any issues on the server itself.

I’ve tried that, and it doesn’t seem to be there. How is it automatically signing me in then? Is it listed as something other than Plex?

I found one, but I can’t figure out how to open it because it has no file extension. When I tried notepad, it says

Cookies are no longer stored in files. Please use InternetCookie APIs to access cookies.

My correction though, nothing auto-populates. All 3 of my browsers just say i’m signed in when I got to plex.

So basically, resetting my password and jacking up my entire network is the only option? I’ve never had a program that didn’t allowed you to see the stored password before.

This looks incredibly painful and outside of my wheelhouse.

Can anyone help me figure out an alternative before I try loading Plex on a new computer? I have temporary access to my old harddrive in a temporary computer, but that will be gone soon.

No. None of the official Plex clients and server are actually using the password. They are using a “Token” which was created when they signed into the plex account the first time.

Changing the password will not invalidate these Tokens (unless you tick the checkbox ‘sign out connected devices’ during the process).

The only things which could potentially cause issues are 3rd party clients and scripts. One such infamous example was a statistics script called PlexWatch. There might be others, so make sure to disable those 3rd-party products prior to changing the password.

Good to know. My question is, if I have to change the password for logging in to my media player in windows, will it cause a problem trying to connect to the server on Synology? Do I have to go into my NAS and change passwords in there? That’s where I will be lost.

No. (You cannot change the Plex password in your NAS, btw.)
You always change the Plex password in your plex.tv account.
That is here: app.plex.tv
