Reinstalled PMS but can no longer claim/setup as server

While I’m not new to technology, I am new to plex, so I apologize in advance & appreciate the assist.
Error >> No soup for you - You do not have access to this server
(tldr = recap @ bottom)

Server Version#: 1.21.3.4021… latest direct download & manual install on DSM 6
Player Version#: (??)

I had plex running on my DS720+ for some time, but never got around to finishing setup & migrating over my media & testing it out on my network (or outside).
When I finally decided to get back to this - I tried connection from my Vizio w/it’s android app built in & preinstalled. I was having issues connecting to the plex server (tbh, days ago and I cannot recall the exact, initial error on the TV). After signing into my plex account on the TV, it connected to PMS showing 2nd manual server as my NAS device, but I assumed this was going out of my network, then coming back in – which would cause unnecessary internet traffic vs going across lan directly to the PMS. So, I removed it :smirk: :gun:

Connectivity to my PMS stopped.

When I first setup the NAS & Plex, I had a flat network. Since then (though it was working) I complicated it with a bunch of VLANs/Subnetting all over the place. I enabled firewall rules on my Unifi to ensure communication from my ‘media’ vlan’ to the NAS/Plex. (TV, Laptops, & NAS are all on separate VLANs & subnets, basic testing seemed to confirm firewall rules were working.) I also have disabled pihole for a few attempts thinking it may be blocking somehow, still didn’t work.

Since that didn’t work - I decided to try to reinstall the plex server (it was due for update anyway, I originally had DSM package installed (v1.18), I then downloaded & installed latest ver (1.21)).

I think (again, noob) I was able to claim the server in my initial (few) attempts, but the Vizio was still not working. So I tried to reinstall/reconfig PMS again and still no-go. I found several other forum posts about the topic and attempted the suggestions within them, but still I am not able to claim the server. I subscribed to plexpass (was going to anyway) thinking it may help claim - nope.

At this point, I’m at a complete loss and need some serious help (in more ways than this, yes I know). All on separate troubleshooting steps >> I deleted the preferences.xml – deleted library folder – rebooted network devices – reinstalled PMS (multiple times, DSM version as well as latest version) – cleared auth-devices – rebooted DSM (obviously) – temp disabled DNS/PiHole – …

I can get to the PMS via IP:32400/web, but just don’t have option to claim it to set it up as a server anymore (no server settings). Next step would be to fully format my drives, and setup DSM from scratch again – but with my recent luck, I’m not sure if this will help!

Recap / Highlights

Synology DS720+ w/PMS 1.21.3…
Unable to claim server (option not present)
deleted preferences.xml & entire library folders in attempt to have PMS rebuild/repair
Plex/Synology is on separate VLAN & subnet from Laptop & TV/Media devices (w/same DNS=PiHole on all networks - also on separate VLAN/subnet)
still: No soup for you

pretty much whatever was mentioned across dozens of other forum posts - but I probably didn’t get to the one about this issue specifically yet (still on the hunt)

You can’t claim a server without using a claim token unless you’re on the same subnet with it.

Given you deleted the server ID out of the Plex share, you also need to remember to delete the server name from “Settings - Authorized Devices - Servers”

In DSM 7, I do provide the capability to claim across network boundaries.

If I may suggest? Too many subnets, while it looks nice, over-complicates things to the point of breakage because UDP traffic does not cross subnet boundaries.

If you’re going to VLAN, might I suggest one flat IP space and then hide/expose by using VLAN tags on the switch ports?

Thanks for the quick response.

I went to settings - authorized device- and deleted (everything) the sessions there, but don’t see any servers listed currently so I can’t delete anything there.

It seems like updating my subnet/vlans is what’s going to be the real benefit here. But maybe I’ll try out dsm7 update first since I’ll eventually be upgrading anyway.

If you’re going to try DSM 7, you do need to be advised of the risks and what it takes to migrate to DSM 7

Please take special note of the migration process (post 6).

It is detail rich. Following them as shown will result in an easy migration.

BE ADVISED

Once upgraded , there is no going back.

Ok so - I decided to take a step back.
I’ll hold off on DSM7 for the time being since it’s still beta & unstable, with higher potential of failure & loss of data. And as for flattening/removing the subnets & vlan tagging ports - I need some more time to think that through - between wifi and other all the other segregations that I setup.

But, I’m still devoted to getting PMS setup!
So, here is where I am at now …

I uninstalled PMS on the nas and moved the nas into another subnet/vlan. I moved my laptop in that subnet/vlan as well and reinstalled PMS. Figured, based on your responses, it’s best to claim the server when it’s on the same subnet - and then I can try to move things back. Lo-and-behold …

Success! :tada: :fireworks:

I moved the devices back into their respective VLANs & subnets. I can access from my laptop. And as soon as I signed into the Vizio (android tv) PLEX app (and separately, nVidia Shield) can connect and access the media & libraries once I signed in. I doubt it’s due to the PlexPass, so anyone else trying without that, it should still work.
(I have yet to setup my Roku TV)

I disabled remote access on PMS - therefore I am assuming it’s not going out to the net & coming back in - I’ll setup and do some network monitoring & tracing to re-confirm, eventually. But I think I’m setup for access from within my home. I’ll probably do some type of VPN for when I’m away.

I appreciate your help @ChuckPa

Glad I could be of help.

Having had a chance for you to read through all that has been written;

The DSM 7 package, as it currently exists in the Forum Preview will be the version 1.0 package.

  1. The package itself is very stable now.

  2. Feedback I’ve received is that the GUI-based installer, supporting 8 languages, has been well received. It’s made installing and managing PMS in this new environment easier than it was even in the DSM 6 environment.

  3. DSM 7 build 41222 is also proving to be stable but I will also caveat that by stating it is being used on my development (not production) system. It shouldn’t matter but ‘technically’ it’s not ‘production’ software.

  4. I’m expecting one more release of DSM 7 from Synology before they declare DSM as “Release Candidate” status. That having been said, their next update might indeed be that Release Candidate as well.

  5. There is one ‘gotcha’ in migrating to DSM 7. That Gotcha is Plug-ins. They are problematic and, given the structure change, have caused problems for folks who were using them. If you have a stock installation, using only the main Plex extras like subtitles, you’ll be fine because I handle the conditions which could arise. In general, as of DSM 7, third-party plug-ins are fully discontinued. The solution is to use container-based tools (e.g. Tautulli) which speak to the API externally instead of attempting to access PMS from the internal API.

  6. If third-party plug-ins are in use, I advise to remove them from the Plex share prior to migrating. Disabling them isn’t sufficient. They must be completely uninstalled to be safe. (some have hard coded paths looking for the “Plex” share – which won’t contain data after migrating)

  7. Upcoming features from me are:

  • Backup and restore (full and mini forms)

  • Hoping to solidify the linkage to Plex.tv such that a full uninstall also removes the server entry from Plex.tv (making re-install easier by avoiding server hostname duplication collisions)

  • Anything else the community might spot I overlooked; seems unlikely given the great input I’ve received from everyone so far and how well the adoption has been.

I am ready to “Turn On” DSM 7 packaging to production status. We’re waiting for Synology to green-light the OS.
