I am new to Plex and having problems with related movies showing up at the bottom of the page when viewing a movie. For some reason some movies won’t show any related movies at the bottom of the page. For example, I have Wonder Woman in my library. When I scroll to the bottom of the page to see related movies my system thinks about it then displays nothing. Also, on some movies it takes about 20 seconds before it shows any related movies whereas other movies the related movies load up straight away.
Related movies is pretty much just matching other movies in similar genres. Sometimes there are just not any matches but I am guessing you have more than one movie in the Action genre like Wonder Woman.
Thanks for getting back to me. I have tried optimising the database but that hasn’t helped. I even have Wonder Woman 1984 in my library and it does the same thing. Would expect it to at least show in related movies that it is part of a collection but doesn’t seem to do that. Have quite a few movies in Action genre.
When I scroll to the bottom of the page I can see the spinning circle but after 20 or 30 secs it gives up and nothing displayed.
It would appear that it’s misbehaving the same for you as it does for me, so I don’t think you have a database (or any other issue) at this point
During my extensive 3 minute testing, it appears that the movies I select that DO NOT SHOW a “related movies” tab also are part of a collection. I also get the extended 30 second spinning wheel for those
Movies that are not part of a collection DO SHOW the “related movies” tab and load immediately
This behavior is the same on Plex for Windows and Plex Web
The fact that “related” items do not show when they are part of a collection is a decision made by Plex years ago. One employee told me (I can’t find the thread, now) that there is a a remark in the code to “not show related items, if if part of a collection” and the code to dhow related items is ignored/skipped over.
I have disabled all collections because of that, I find the related items give me a bigger and more varied delection to choose from - especially if a collection only has a few items. Fortunately, smart collections don’t have the same rule applied, and that’s the only way I create and use collections now.
Just tested out what you mentioned and you are right. Movies that are part of a big collection show the spinning wheel for 30 seconds and then displays nothing. However, some movies that are part of a small collection, like Puss in Boots, after 20 seconds do show up with movies related but only the movies in collection plus some recommended movies based on actors. Movies that are not part of collection Do show related movies plus movies from actors and load up a lot quicker.
So to get things to work I should go to my movies library, go to option that says minimum automatic collection size and change that to disabled, delete all the collections all ready created and start to create smart collections instead if we want related movies to work?
On my chrome browser, I get “related movies” on any movie not in a collection, plus 1 or 2 “Movies with ACTORNAMEHERE” rows. For a movie in a collection, I get the other movies in the collection, plus 1 or 2 “Movies with ACTORNAMEHERE” rows. So for me it simply seems like the “related movies” widget is being replaced by the collection row.
I do not get any perpetual loading circle. The response is fast enough that I never see any loading. It’s possible it is doing the spinny circle loading, but by the time I click a movie then scroll down to the “related” row, it’s already loaded and done.
Which client are you seeing this load circle on? Browser? TV? Nvidia Shield? iOS?
To be honest, I disabled the automatic collections option years ago. The libraries used the old agents and scanners - there were options to enable automatic collections, but none for the minimum, if I recall correctly. I don’t know if I also had to edit and remove the tag within each movie as well, so the collection wouldn’t be re-created each time the library was scanned…
I have used Chrome, Edge Browser, AppleTV and Nvidia Shield. All do the same thing. Just happens randomly. For example, I have the fast and furious collection. It takes a while but eventually loads up the movies in the collection and some movies with actor name. Other movies, like Wonder Woman, which I have both in a collection, don’t show anything.
