Because of my problems stated above, I am now trying out the “normal” Plex Media Player.
I don’t like it!
My HTPC goes up a lot in heat and due to that fans speed up.
Clicking around is slow and it doesn’t make sense, aka I don’t know where to click to get to a certain TV-show.
If subs is out of sync, it’s not possible to adjust.
Please please get OpenPHT back on track
is there a thread on this?
I’ve finally made the switch from OpenPHT (Black Edition skin for the win) to Plex Media Player: UNO Preview UI on macOS … Lived with that for maybe a couple of week’s now.
It still lacks some of the polish and bells and whistles of OpenPHT (fewer customization options; fewer advanced options; no skinning; not as much use of cool fan-art backgrounds and you’ve gotta know to turn of background blurring to get decent backgrounds anywhere at all, although at least turning off blur is an option; no fan-art or photo screensavers or any screensavers at all except for the lame bouncing Plex logo; some issues with the app resizing to a smaller window on macOS after turning the TV off and on; fewer specific options for control via Harmony remote, although core functionality maps to the remote fine; overly large poster art; etc.)…
But overall PMP UNO is an adequate replacement for OpenPHT, IMHO… Much better than any previous PMP version; plenty of similarities with the best aspects of the OpenPHT and old PHT UIs; a number of customization options; nifty recommendation “Hubs” for surfacing content, but with more control over which Hubs are used and where they appear, compared to previous PMP versions; support for various newer Plex options/widgets/channels; and avoidance of most of the little bugs and incompatibility issues that have built up on OpenPHT over the last few years of non-development. Plus: Semi-regular updates and bug fixes, which is something poor ol’ OpenPHT has been missing for a while.
RIP OpenPHT, the once (and future?) king of Plex interfaces: You got us through the dark years between the fall of the landmark Plex Home Theater to the nefarious iterations of Plex Media Player.
For now, long live UNO. Try it out if you haven’t yet. It’s got lots of room for improvement, but once you’ve gotten used to it and tweaked what can be tweaked, it’s pretty cool, not a bad OpenPHT replacement (and easier to set up and maintain than the various Kodi-Plex options, which offer ultimate customization but also ultimate headaches if you don’t have undying patience haha), plus some extra perks.
That’s my experience with PMP UNO on OSX anyway, YMMV.
But if OpenPHT ever miraculously rises from the dead with a 2.0 and Black Edition in tow, I’ll be back
Same… Windows pmp.
Have been a die hard opht user… Pmp is finaly what it should have been in first place. Hopefully more usee customiAtion will be added, and some of the fanart related points you made
Same here. Small playback issues with no fixes in sight, made the switch to PMP. Miss the customization via skins, along with more player controls, but seamless playback with nary an issue is worth it to me.
Did the same move myself and is OK with PMP at the moment. I just need to get around to re-map the key bindings for the apple remote so I can get back to what I am used to. If anyone managed to do this, I would be interested in the json.
Any chance we could get to try this on a raspberry pi?
I used to be a die hard Rasplex user but since i got a 4k TV i have moved on to a s912 with CoreELEC and and PKC (Plex Kodi Connect)
PKC is great, it basically turns any Kodi install (windows, mac, coreelec, libreelec, android etc…) into PHT, but with the added extra of endless customization (skins etc…)
The developer @croneter is great too, he seems to update it almost every day and listens to feedback.
Give it a try.
So now that PMP (even though I still never used it) is being killed off, what are the chances of a revival of OpenPHT? PMP still never understood that their interface sucked compared to having skins in OpenPHT. Mine is still working with the server I have installed and I sure don’t plan on upgrading it until (if ever) OpenPHT or something similar is updated.

The chances are very low for a new/updated native OpenPHT client but maybe there will be an easy one-click alternative someday (KODI 18.3 + builtin plexkodiconnect/emby + skin night/estuary)
Who knows, never say never ![]()
RIP best Plex front-end. The Kodi addon just doesn’t have the options and customization that PHT had.
