Remote Access bandwidth limit

It’s not Infuse. I have the same problem using both Infuse and the Plex client app. It started a couple of updates ago so it’s definitely one of the updates that has caused the issue.

in which case you probably have a different issue?

The issue is that an update was applied and then bandwidth is falsely limited all of a sudden over remote access. So what remote access changes have been made in the recent updates?

Let’s do this step by step:

  • you’re trying to playback remote videos from a Plex Media Server outside your Home network… just to verify: is this your server you’re streaming from or one of a friend?
  • what version of the Plex Media Server is that?
  • what client are you using (platform and version)?
  • can you check if the client has any remote/internet streaming quality limits set (settings slightly vary per client… usually something like Settings > Quality > Remote Streaming)
  • can you check if the playback is using a Plex Relay („indirect connection“) — if this is your server you should be able to see this using Plex Web under „Now Playing“ on the server status dashboard
  • any other meaningful information on the server‘s remote access setup and configuration (e.g. any server side bandwidth or transcoding quality limits)?

PS: I moved these posts into a Thread of their own in order not to mix things up. Similar symptoms don’t make this the same issue (nor will the same fix apply to your situation)

Just posted in the other thread before I saw that it was split. Pretty sure I’m experiencing the same issue here. Feel free to move that post here if it would be useful.

My family uses my server remotely from time to time. Lately they can’t stream anything. It will cycle between buffering and playing for a few seconds and then finally fail with an error about lacking bandwidth for playback.

My PMS running on a Synology DS918+ version 1.19.3.2764 but the previous version had the same issue which is when I noticed it.

Remote Streaming Quality set at 2Mbps, 720p.

Relay is disabled.

Server side upload bandwidth limit is set to 500Mbps (I have a full gig). No limits set on transcoder.

Edit: My family is using a Roku Premier Plus as the client.

Hi,

Please see responses below…

  • you’re trying to playback remote videos from a Plex Media Server outside your Home network… just to verify: is this your server you’re streaming from or one of a friend?

My server

  • what version of the Plex Media Server is that?

Version 1.19.3.2764

  • what client are you using (platform and version)?

Infuse 6 (ios) and Plex 6.11.1 (ios)

  • can you check if the client has any remote/internet streaming quality limits set (settings slightly vary per client… usually something like Settings > Quality > Remote Streaming ).

Internet streaming video quality set to Maximum.

  • can you check if the playback is using a Plex Relay („indirect connection“) — if this is your server you should be able to see this using Plex Web under „Now Playing“ on the server status dashboard.

Using Plex Relay (no issues with direct connection/off relay)

  • any other meaningful information on the server‘s remote access setup and configuration (e.g. any server side bandwidth or transcoding quality limits)?

Upload speed set to 25 Mbps. Remote stream bitrate set to 20 Mbps (have also tested this setting on 2Mbps and “Original”).

I went through the Plex server files that I still had and reverted back to version 1.18.6.2368, and everything worked as expected (had no issues with any previous versions). The problem began with version 1.19.1.2645 and continued with all following versions.

Not sure if there were any other versions in between the two I mentioned, but 1.19.1.2645 was the starting point for the issue out of the versions I still had.

Thanks

That’s your bottleneck… indirect connections are limited to 1 Mbit/s (2 Mbit/s for Plex Pass members).

Limitations

When relaying a connection through us, there are limitations for the streaming qualities you can use:

  • Free users are limited to 1 Mbps maximum for streams
  • Plex Pass subscribers are limited to 2 Mbps maximum for streams

If the content you’re trying to stream has a higher bitrate, then your Plex Media Server will need to transcode the content down to fit the limitation.

Tip! : If you wish to stream at a higher quality when away from home, you’ll need to successfully on your server so that your app can connect with it directly.

Yeah I thought that would be the cause, but then by that logic I should have always had an issue streaming over relay. It doesn’t explain why I can steam on older versions without any problem.

Back then you might have remote access working correctly. Some change to your network, the Plex configuration or on your ISP side might have kicked this off its rails, causing your connection to go indirect.

Hi exact same issue here.

How come, that when I downgrade it works just fine again
It worked just fine for 2 years. all I ever did was klick the enable remote access button…

now to get it to work I have to manually open ports in my router

Same here mine has been working almost 12 months since I started using Plex but not now. Refusing to acknowledge what has been changed in the server patching is very frustrating and clearly affecting multiple users.

So I’ve tried adding 0.0.0.0/0 as a LAN address and having the same issue. Other’s have reported this as being a temp workaround but I’m not seeing that unless I’m doing something wrong.

Same issue after updating today. Getting “indirect” play back all of a sudden for remote users.

So, I did a few thing to get this to not play “Indirect” anymore for remote users. Removed/re-added the port forward rule on my router and unchecked the “Enable Relay” checkbox on the Plex server and bounced it.

NordVPN, was the issue for me, i had Invisibility on LAN activated, even if my vpn was disconnected or application was not opened, i turned off IonL and then had to reboot comp and then infuse worked at my apple tv again with Direct Play
