Remote access enabled, cannot access server over internet outside of LAN

Server Version#: Latest Stable
Player Version#: Latest Stable

I have Remote Access Enabled on PMS, I point my browser (LAN) at https://app.plex.tv/desktop/ and can see and play content from my Linux based PMS. So far, so good.

However, I cannot connect remotely from devices connected to the internet outside of my LAN. Plex.tv says it’s “bummed” about it. Yeah, right…

I’m assuming that if content is visible on and playable from https://app.plex.tv/desktop/ remote access is functioning. (?)

If so, why can’t I access the content over an internet connection not facilitated by my LAN? What am I missing?

Thanks

Did you check your settings in Plex to make sure remote access is available? It’s most likely a port forwarding issue. Go to the Remote Settings in Plex and check that your public port is properly configured in your router to forward to your server for access

No. That’s just the URL from where you’ll be opening the web app. The web app itself is running inside your browser and therefore accessing your media server locally (if you’re in the same network).

Did you already have a look at the related troubleshooting support article?

There’s also a guide with some more details on how to troubleshoot remote access issues (including some of the points raised by avg24).

Thanks for the feedback, folks, but it is time to admit I am probably too stupid to be using PMS.

Working my why through the suggestions, with the UFW disabled and port forwarding set up as best as I can, I’m confronted with

Fully accessible outside your network
You can access this server from signed-in Plex apps or in a browser at https://app.plex.tv/desktop.

This message stays up for about 20 seconds. Then the connection drops and I get

> Not available outside your network
> Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network. [Learn more]

It’s getting too tedious and frustrating. I’ll give it up.

Cheers

The outcome of the individual steps should give a picture of what’s blocking your remote access setup (beyond „it’s not working“).

e.g.

  • do the public IP addresses identified by Plex (see remote access settings) and your router match?
  • can you „see“ your port forwarding from outside your home network (e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org)
