Remote Access for beginners

I’ve been using Plex with great pleasure and only minor glitches (barring a few iOS changes from Plex) for better part of year. But throughout that time I’ve never had remote access working. I’ve since put some attention on the problem, watched a YouTube ‘tutorial’ consulted these forums etc. Even have a friend who runs an IT company help out with some of the terminology etc.

I have Plex on a QNAP TS251+ server.
Macbook Pro and iPhone 8 are my devices.
All software/firmware for PLEX, QNAP and Mac iOS are uptodate.

My router is UPnP enabled.
I’ve managed to get ‘Remote Access is Available’ (green script) for 3 seconds at a time before it reverts to 'Remote Access is not accessible outside your network (red script) again.

Anyone else have this or similar problem?

Ignoring the indicator… can you connect e.g. from your iPhone when you disable WIFI (“simulating you’re not home”)? Sometimes the indicator gives you a false status or is slow to update…

Remote Access using UPnP didn’t work for me when I started using Plex from outside my network – ever since I’ve enabled it using a static port forward on my router and Plex (basically telling the router to route all requests to a certain port to the machine running Plex and letting Plex know so it addresses this particular port).

Have you tried that already?
It might still be an alternative if your router supports / ISP support it.

Thanks Tom. I did that (or thought I had) and the message was still that my remote access is not working. but in the last couple days it is in fact working, so for now problem solved!
