Questions on remote access - I currently do not have a Plex Pass, and I am looking to share my libraries with my immediate family. I have added each as a managed user, but do not see any invite button. How can I “invite” them, and/or have them be able to access the drive locally and remotely?

Since it is only 3 users at this, I may just have them each buy unlock the app… but if this becomes too complex, then may purchase the pass.

You don’t invite them… when it comes to managed users, you create them, sign them in, give them a PIN and let them stream. Managed users are not necessarily intended for use cases outside your actual home… for that scenario, giving them an actual Plex account might be more suitable (e.g. so they don’t need you to sign them in as managed users belong to your account in every sense).

I think I understand the use of Managed Users, and that is not my intent. I am not looking to restrict any content locally.

I have ‘Add a Friend’, which I have put the user name of my son in there. He can see the library now. However, this is the question:

  • If HE purchases the unlock feature, I would assume he can download offline on his phone movies that I have allowed downloading for? Yes / No
  • If I purchase the Plex Pass, and he doesnt pay the $5, can he still fully watch and download offline the movies that I shared with him? Yes / No / Caveat

That’s kind of a moving target at the moment.
As of today, the mobile sync feature depends on the server owner having a Plex Pass and granting a friend / managed user permission to download items from that server. That’s valid as of today and also applies to the “download” feature (currently in preview, about to replace mobile sync).

In the future, the new download feature will require a Plex Pass membership for the user who’s going to download media, while it’ll no longer matter if the server owner has one (all the server owner needs to do is grant permission to download to their users).

Unlocking the mobile client (e.g. Plex for iOS) does not give him a Plex Pass. All that does is lift the 1-minute playback restriction.

Thanks @tom80H - Will the existing functionality be grandfathered into the new Download feature, or will existing Plex Pass Admin today will require their family to purchase passes in the future?

If the later is true, I might wait on a pass… but if it the current functionality is grandfathered, I may consider purchasing this week.

At some point, they’ll need their own Plex Pass to download media to one of their clients. The date when this is going to happen has not yet been communicated.
