Remote access half working? But not via app

Hello, remote access just randomly stopped working but only partly. I haven’t updated/changed settings and plex has been working flawlessly for at least a year now. I have it running on my freenas server.

Here is what I’m experiencing Local play is fine. The dashboard shows not accessible remotely(picture). When I try to access from a remote device via the app TV/Phone all of my media loads correctly and I can see the thumbnails, when I try to play something it says “an error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.” What seems to be strange is that if I go to a web browser and navigate to public:ip/web my media will play normally.

I’m not a crazy IT expert let me know if I can provide any more details that might help, or if I can clarify anything thanks!.

Would you say it, does all of the following?

When secure connections are set to preferred:

  • Web app both remote and local work
  • Local hardwire connections to my local network using Roku and Android work
  • WIFI connections to local network for Roku and Android do not work
  • No remote connections work other than the web app

When secure connections are set to disabled:

  • Web app will work with local hardwire
  • Web app will not work on local WIFI or remote
  • All local network connections both hardwire and WIFI to both Roku and Android work
  • All remote connections work except the web app

YES this seems to be how it is functioning, I think you know what’s going on here!

is there a reason you are using such an old server version?

1.18.3.2129 was released in December 2019.

Current versions are 1.23.5.4862 and 1.23.6.4863 (Plex Pass) [Reference].

The current releases contain fixes to improve the reliability of remote access (put in place in late 2020 IIRC).

Also, there is a problem with current Android / Android TV clients and old (1.18, etc) versions of Plex Media Server. The problem does not exist with current Plex Media Server releases.

If possible, update to a current release.
