Remote Access Has Just Stopped Working

I tried this, enabled Split Tunneling on my VPN and disabled the VPN for Plex Media Server. Disabled then re-enabled remote access and now it seems to be working… very odd as it worked fine with the VPN until a few days ago.

I can definitely confirm that having the DoS Protection enabled is the cause of the remote access issue in my case. Can anyone from Plex confirm if the latest release made any changes to the way remote access is being checked as I haven’t had any issues until 4282. It looks like the DoS setting protection stops 3 things

1. SYN-Flooding Protection : Only allow one TCP/SYN packet to pass per second.
2. Port Scanner Protection : Protect router from port scanning via external port scan tool
3. Ping of Death : Only allow one ICMP packet(type 8) to pass per second or drop the length of ICMP packet over 65535.

I am happy to leave the setting off as it isn’t really neccessary but still curious why it has suddenly become a problem. Does Plex rely on external port scan or could the frequency of packets be an issue?

A developer has said that it might be the first check of the three which might cause issues with Plex. You can exceed this limit with just one Plex client in use.

Hi. By Firmware I meant the latest build of plex.
Ive logged on today and downloaded the log files. However it does not create a PDF it creates a folder with about 50 items in it.
Im clearly being dumb so id appreciate and idots guide if you can :joy:

Ive only noticed this issue in the last few weeks where remote has dropped off, however as of yesterday when i installed the newest version of plex, it drops after a few mins.

Thanks for your help

if you are downloading from the trouble shooting section of settings it should download a zip file. Your browser might be automatically opening the zip file ( not sure what browser you are using but I would turn off any setting that automatically opens/decompresses files)

but yes I am asking for the entire zip file with all those log files in that folder but can probably start with the plex media server.log files

Thanks. Will post them when back home tomorrow. Ta

@jgille8 Your logs indicate it thinks you might have a doublenat . Can you explain how your network is set up? Routers, modems, if you are running VPN or anything like that.

Apr 07, 2021 14:07:45.536 [10844] DEBUG - MyPlex: reachability check - current mapping state: 'Mapped - Not Published (Double NAT)'.
Apr 07, 2021 14:07:45.536 [10844] ERROR - MyPlex: mapping failed due to potential double NAT configuration
Apr 07, 2021 14:07:45.536 [10844] DEBUG - MyPlex: mapping state set to 'Mapped - Not Published (Double NAT)'.

Looks like relay is kicking in and that is what is limiting the stream to 720p

Also, have been experiencing the same issues here. Was working fine until the update. Since then every day it seems like there’s a new problem to locate and fix. Tried everything mentioned in this thread and still no luck.

What’s most frustrating to see that plex is aware of this and other issues yet there’s absolutely no support for paying users. we are all just left on here to figure it out amongst ourselves.

2 steps away from just going back to Kodi FR fr… this is like an abusive relationship. ugh.

I’m also having this issue with remote viewing after the update 1.22.2.4282. Plex takes awhile to load my library on the app, once loaded it plays media indirectly at SD quality and doesn’t let me choose a higher quality but it does play. In the settings “Remote Access” shows green but then I click into it and it turns red “Not available outside your network” message. Yet it’s still playing videos for me and other remote friends.

I’m in the US on cable internet and this isn’t the first time this has happened after a Plex update. This is my first time posting about this though. I did notice another user mention they were using an Asus router and seen that they disabled DoS protection in the Firewall settings. I actually had DoS protection disabled by default on my Asus router and I believe that’s why I can still indirectly access movies, as well as my friends. However, it wasn’t acting like this before the update.

Plex support please help fix this issue. Thanks!

As mentioned above need to look at server logs. You can get them from troubleshooting section of server settings.

same issue here. not sure what happened and when exactly but i can’t get remote access to work.
My setup was working flawless for years.
Unraid server with plex docker by binhex with plexpass
Pfsense with intel i350 nics
No double NAT. and on direct Fiber
it worked like a charm and never any issues.
but now?? damn i have no idea where to look

On the matter of LOGS! i don’t want to post my logs here in public. it holds my external IP too
I have no problem in sharing the logs to the appropriate people, just not publicly

@FlashMix2k6 Can you please restart server wait like 5 minutes and grab logs again. You logs are full of errors. One Apr 22, 2021 23:53:36.884 [8704] ERROR - Error issuing curl_easy_perform(handle): 28 generally indicates a network issue with DNS. . The one most recent log covers since the 22nd which is a long time for one log. it looks like relay kicked in for a little while which is why it may have seemed to work properly over the weekend.

It is fine to message me the logs. click on my username/avatar and then click the message button in window that appears.

Hi BigWheel,

Having the same issue here. Remote access use to work perfectly fine, and now when I try to enable it, it goes green for a couple of seconds until I refresh the page and it then shows up red again. Would I be allowed to upload my logs so you can see what the go is?

I look forward to hearing from you,

Cheers, Olly

Good afternoon Plexer’s! I have been running my plex server with remote access for years now. However about a month ago my remote access stopped working. I use this for streaming music to my cell phone mostly when I’m out, but occasionally want to cast a movie when at a friends house. I have tried everything to NO avail to get this working again. My router is forwarded properly, my plex settings never changed. It just stopped working after a recent update.

Now I don’t know if this was due to a plex update, windows update, or a tatuilli update. However every time I switch the remote access settings, it sais it works for a minute, but then stops working. It never connects. Open port setting does not detect plex even though the port is forwarded on the router- the same way it always has been. I have attached logs since this issue seems prevalent with many users and I can’t find a fix for it anywhere. Any advice would be helpful at this point since I have exhausted all known options.

Can you please turn off Verbose logging. Restart server, give it like 2 minutes then grab logs again.

Just wanted to say I have the same symptoms. If had remote playback working for years. Remote play shows green briefly then back to red.

I also have a asus router (ax88u) but my DoS is already disabled. Not at a place i can provide logs currently but can get you them tomorrow if youd like.

Running latest Win 10 Pro. ATT Gigapower (pace box i believe) gateway connected to asus router connected to 24p switch.
Plex .4392

What happens is the remote access gets enabled. PMS sends the connection data to Plex.tv. Plex.tv test the connection by pinging the server at IP/port it works then the server changes to green.

On thing I would do is check Canyouseeme.org while server is running enter the external port and check that it can be seen there.

ATT = AT&T?

Correct, at&t. The port is not seen, connection timeout. So it sounds like my port forwarding isnt working. Suggestions on next steps?

I appreciate the help.

At&t gateway:

Manufacturer ARRIS
Model Number BGW210-700

I don’t have AT&T so can’t help with specifics but if you have the second Asus router that the computer is actually connected to then you likely have a Double NAT. which essentially means two separate networks.

If you prefer to use the ASUS as the main “router” then you may need to ask AT&T how to change the Arris to “bridge” mode so it only acts as a modem. or change your ASUS to only act as an access point/switch and have the Arris act as the router. Basically only one of them should be acting as a router and giving out the IP addresses to devices on the network.

If you look in the settings of the Asus and it has as it’s WAN (external) address something like 192.168.1.x then that is the IP the AT&T Arris assigned it rather than your real WAN address

Edit:

I’m an idiot =)
I replaced my AC88U with an AX88U about a month ago. I was using the “Passthrough Fixed MAC Address” mode and it was still set for the AC88U which is now acting as an AP. My issue is resolved. Thanks for leading me down the right path.
