Remote access is not working

Hi there,

I recently bought a new Netgear Orbi router and am trying to get my Plex Server running on it. I keep getting the ‘not available outside of your network’ error and have confirmed people outside my network can’t see the server.

Originally I tried to set the server up via UPnP to no avail. From there, I turned off UPnP and put my computer on a static IP address and set up port forwarding to it (also checked ‘manually specify public port’ in PMS). It worked for a few minutes, but then stopped working again, which I thought was super-weird.

My Netgear Orbi is running the latest firmware (V2.2.1.210), and my Plex server is up-to-date. I am running the server on Windows 7 with all updates installed.

I can ping my IP address from the internet, but when I use a tool like https://canyouseeme.org/, it can’t see port 32400 (the public port I set up for forwarding).

I attached the screen grabs of my settings, but I must admit I’m not really good with networking. If anybody knows what could be causing this, I’d really appreciate your help.

Thanks!
Robert.

Your setup looks ok. If you cannot access the router from the outside (e.g. using canyouseeme.org with your public IP address and the port you have forwarded) you might check a different port first (in case your isp is blocking this port in particular.

If this still doesn’t work you should contact your ISP if the block certain Ports and could unblock this for you (some ISPs do that for security reasons… sometimes those are reasonable, sometimes they’re not).

If your ISP is basically handling his network as his own „home network“ instead of actually assigning you a public IP address (e.g. 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x bands) you could ask them to provide you with a public IP address (not necessarily a dedicated one… however the ISP might try to charge you with some extra cost.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your response! I appreciate the help, and the validation my settings look ok

The first thing I did after reading your message was to change my external port to 20000, to no avail. It’s now set back to 32400.

I’m using Comcast for Business as my ISP. I contacted them and they confirmed the firewall is shut off on their side and that no ports are being blocked. They said everything looks fine on their side.

Last night I also turned the firewall off on my Windows 7 machine, but I’m wondering if there’s some other Windows 7 ‘feature’ that blocks incoming connections? I couldn’t find anything but I’m not super-experienced in networking.

If there’s anything else you can think of please let me know. This is driving me crazy!

Thanks,
Robert.

From the symptoms you have described, it appears the issue is between the ISP and your router (as you cannot reach the router from the outside at the given port).

I’ve spent most of the day on this. I finally realized that my external IP address is a 71.xxx.xxx.xxx address, and when I go to my modem is shows my external address is 10.xxx.xxx.xxx.

I think the issue is that the Comcast modem contains a DHCP server, and my router also has a DHCP server. But, when I try to turn off the DHCP server on the modem (Comcast gave me the credentials) I don’t get any internet activity. And when I turn off the DHCP server on my router, all my Orbi satellites go dark.

Unfortunately I didn’t get a masters in networking, so I’m at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. Have you seen this scenario before?

Thanks!
Robert.
