Remote Access issues and messing with my head

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2058
Player Version#:

Hi everyone,

I have been using Plex for a few months with good results at home. Im am trying to set up sharing with a few friends but am having some issues which is doing my head in. I have read all the threads here about the same issue but its made me more confused. So i wanted to reach out to the brain trust for some help.

So connected to plex in the house is no issue. I can run it on my tv’s fine. but it is external. It has worked on a couple of tv outside the house and i can see it on my phone as well outside of the house.

My problem is though, its saying im not available outside my network.

I have tried to follow the instructions for my modem (ASUS DSL-AC88U) with no success.

So my question is, any suggestions on what next steps i can take to try and get this working correctly?

Thanks for your help

You have already sort of answered your own question… if remote access is actually working for you, there should be no need to further tinker with the remote access settings.
The Remote Access status is known to occasionally be off for various reasons…

Two questions you might want to look into:

  1. When you open Plex Web (https://app.plex.tv/desktop) from outside your home network… does the server show as remote or indirect?
Indirect will mean the communication is going through a relay server of Plex which will significantly limit the bandwidth available for your streaming
  2. Did you actually configure your router/modem to allow a manual port forward? If you didn’t, you might want to uncheck Manually specify public port.

PS: as you edited the screenshot to hide part of the IP addresses… the address you actually want to hide is the public IP address as that’s the address your home network is visible/accessible from the outside while the private address is only applicable from within your home network!
