Remote Access no longer works

I don’t know precisely when it happened (within the last 30 days), but remote access (direct) to my PMS no longer works. When remote clients connect, they are only connected via indirect which is … unreliable, at best.

When I attempt to re-enable Remote Access, it turns green for a split second, and then goes back to red. The server has always been configured for a manually specified port (32400), and it has worked reliably for a very long time.

Troubleshooting steps taken so far:

  • Verified that the firewall NAT policy and firewall rules are correct (Sophos UTM)
  • Verified that the Windows firewalls are disabled
  • Verified that I can telnet to 32400 at my public IP, so I know the port is open
  • Verified that the only device listening on port 32400 is the Plex server
  • Disabled/re-enabled Remote Access in the server configuration, while waiting a minute or so in between.
  • Rebooted the firewall and the Plex server
  • Checked the server logs which shows the error - “NAT: PMP, got an error: NATPMP_ERR_RECVFROM”
  • Checked the connection routes for PMS. I was expecting to see an entry with my public IP and local=0, but one doesn’t exist. Only the LAN IP and a relay one are shown. See below.
<Device name="PlexServer" product="Plex Media Server" productVersion="1.13.4.5251-2e6e8f841" platform="Windows" platformVersion="10.0 (Build 14393)" device="PC" clientIdentifier="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" createdAt="1360470123" lastSeenAt="1531290123" provides="server" owned="1" accessToken="xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" publicAddress="xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" httpsRequired="0" synced="0" relay="1" publicAddressMatches="0" presence="1">
<Connection protocol="https" address="10.0.0.25" port="32400" uri="https://10-0-0-25.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.plex.direct:32400" local="1"/>
<Connection protocol="https" address="45.79.184.41" port="8443" uri="https://45-79-184-41.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.plex.direct:8443" local="0" relay="1"/>

I’ve looked at several forum posts while attempting to fix this, including the two below, but haven’t hit upon anything that helps with the issue.

Any ideas on what to try next?

Mine stopped working as well. I’m running on a Synology server. Had no issues until I tried to access my server remotely today. I just installed the latest update to see if that would make any difference, but nothing. Additional info: If I go to plex through my domainname.com:32400 it seems to work. Only trying to go through plex.tv seems to not be working at the moment.

Update: My server’s working now. For some reason the server was disconnected for remote access. I went the domainname:32400 route and found it to be disabled, enabled it and now it’s working.

can you check if jumbo frames are on in your router or computer (they should not be)
if your portforward rule is set to use both TCP and UDP protocols can you change it to just TCP.

Jumbo frames are not enabled on the router or the server.

I did have UDP enabled as well. Configured the firewall for just TCP 32400, and disabled/re-enabled Remote Access. Unfortunately, no change in behavior. It flashed green briefly, and straight back to red.

I have the same issue. For me, I believe this was due to Comcast changing the Port Forwarding feature on their cable modem to be in the cloud. I’m still working on this, so it is not resolved yet. Comcast said [wait for it] to power cycle my modem.

It is comforting to know many others are having “Remote Server” Issues as well. Mine also has been green for a second, and then turns red.

I disable server, and enable server, and it is hit or miss.

Nothing changed on my computer or router side. I am not manually port forwarding either. It always worked – for years – with the automatic connection…

Sigh.

clearheatvision,

Mine is doing the same thing. It turns green for just a second, so I think it will start working, but then it turns red every time. Mine never works, so it is not hit or miss like yours.

The one thing I know has changed, although I don’t know when, is that my Xfinity router had all of its port forwarding settings moved to the internet instead of being directly on the router. I have not found anything that has worked.

Plex Support, do you have any suggestions? Are you monitoring these forums?
