Remote Access Not Available outside WiFi Network

I’ve been on and off trying to figure out how to set-up remote access using my cloud and nest wifi. I have tried to port forward using the google home app and google support are not able to help with this issue. I’ve tried to find help fixing the issue but ive not seen anybody with my combination of hardware trying to fix a WD My Cloud/Google Nest WiFi issue. Can anybody direct me to a simple guide on youtube or a simple step by step guide in writing. It seems to be a complex issue that i dont think anybody has had, as ive not found anybody in the same scenario. Thanks in advance.

Plex server is running on the WD?

Does the WD (or whatever is running the server) have a static IP address? It needs one.

What device is acting as your main router? FYI this is where you need to a setup static IP and port forwarding.

You can check if a port is open at https://canyouseeme.org/ .

Thanks for the response, I don’t have a static IP so I think I will just accept that it’s not going to work. Trying to sort this will take too much learning and digging I think. Unless someone has a tutorial on how to do this I will just leave it as is, thanks though ;).

That static IP I was talking about is your LAN (internal) IP for whatever device is running your Plex server. You should be able to set this in your router.

You don’t need a static IP.

You need a „publicly routable IPv4 address“ from your ISP. No need for it to be static.

Your server should have an IP reservation within your home network. While I recommend using a manual port forward (as it gives me a little more control), others have their remote access setup working just fine with UPnP.

Some other common causes for having issues with your remote access could be an issue your home network setup (e.g. „is your Nest directly connected to the internet or is there some other router/modem?“).

Thanks for the response. When I goto the advanced settings on my nest router I can select the WD MYCLOUD IP address and then follow normal port forwarding but still doesn’t work. Really have no idea what or how to fix issue, any troubleshooting or any advice I’ve followed just doesn’t work. I thought someone would have my combination of hardware and issue and found a way round but I must be the only person with this problem ;(.
