Remote Access Not available outside your network

Server Version#: 1.18.0.1944
Player Version#:

Hi all, I’ve been unable to get this problem solved for a while now,. My router has uPNP enabled, but still no luck. Hoping you can help me out. I’ve done the following.

  1. Set a static IP for my plex server (on my desktop) on my router, as Asus RT-AC68U
  2. Enabled port forwarding of TCP 32400

Any advice? I’d love to be able to stream my own music at work instead of listening to Pandora

disable UPNP.

check canyouseeme.org for success on port 32400
make sure the IP reported on canyouseeme.org matches what is in your router.
post shots of your port forwarding.

!

Canyouseeme shows a different IP address than what my pc says it has. Is that something I need to change in my forwarding section for the router?

I suggest specifying the internal port to be 32400 on your port forwarding rule as well. I know in the Asus software it is listed as optional, but since it isn’t working for you it is better to ensure that is populated.

Also, in Plex web settings -> Remote Access make sure to check “Manually specify public port”, enter 32400 as the external port, and click on “Apply”.

Try canyouseeme again.

Canyouseeme is showing your public IP address, not your computer’s internal network address. I STRONGLY suggest removing that from your post. It gives people too much information about “where” you are on the internet.

Populated the internal port with 32400 also.

Plex Web settings was already manually specified to that port.

Still no luck, still says not available outside my network.

Whenever I tell it to retry it will briefly say that my server is available outside my network before it changes and tells me that it isn’t available outside my network.

Is the IP address from canyouseeme the same as the IP address that you see for the public IP address on the Plex web remote access page?

Also, is the WAN IP address on your router the same as both of these? (On your Asus web interface, click on “Network Map”, then I think “WAN IP” shows under “Internet Status”. If it doesn’t click on “Internet Status” and look for “WAN IP” on the right.)

Yes, the IP address from canyouseeme is the same as the public one in the Plex remote access page. My WAN IP address is different from them. To further complicate things, my modem also shows a different WAN IP address from all of the above ones.

With the canyouseme IP different from your Asus WAN IP it is likely you have a double NAT, though I’m still not sure I understand your network topology. @nokdim - would appreciate your insight as well.

Is your setup:

Plex Server Computer
connected to
Asus Router
with WAN port connected to
Modem
connected to
Coax cable (or some other connector?) coming into your residence

No other network devices?

Double NATs can be tough to deal with. Essentially the modem has it’s own network that your Asus router is connected to similar to how your Asus router has a network that your computer is connected to, so the network traffic coming in from the internet isn’t getting past your modem to your Asus router to be forwarded to your computer. Who is your ISP, and what is the brand/model of your modem? In the modem’s web interface do you see any way to set the modem to bridge mode?

Here is where I’m concerned to make a recommendation to proceed. By changing the modem to bridge mode you remove the layer of networking at the modem level and we should be able to get Plex remote access working. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with removing this layer of networking, but you would need to restart your router and possibly would need to make changes to your Asus router’s WAN config to (hopefully) get it to pick up the change and reconnect to the internet. However, if it doesn’t work then you won’t have internet connectivity and would need to be able to troubleshoot or switch back. Are you comfortable with networking, or do you have an IT friend that is and can help?

We get our internet access through a cellular modem on the AT&T network provided by 4GAS.

Plex server PC connected by ethernet to
Asus Router connected through wan port to
Cellular Modem

The modem model number is C100-T. It does have one ethernet port as well as wifi functionality.
I have turned off the wifi functionality in favor of using the Asus router. That is it for network devices. I contacted 4GAS about bridge mode and the directions they sent me were to disbale the DHCP server in the Asus settings in order to allow the modem to handle DHCP, but that did’t seem to have any effect on my issue either. I then reverted back to the previous settings since it had no effect.

I’m by no means a network or IT person, but I feel comfortable changing the settings around on my own.

Edit: I’m running Windows 10 on a PC that I built a few years ago.

Most likely if you have internet through cellular you will not be able to get remote access to work.

You can contact your ISP and ask for a static IP address but from my experience cellular carriers rarely do that.

You are essentially in a double Nat but being on cellular I don’t think you will be able to get this working.
