I’m having the same problem with my WD My Home also. Some kind of security thing I guess. For now I’ve disabled secure connections under the network settings in the server settings. That will allow the remote access to start working again. However, the web app will not because it needs a secure connection. Not a big deal, just annoying AF.
I’m hoping for a real fix soon from someone. I have a feeling WD need to push down a new plex firmware.
It current runs a 1.18.6.2350. Knowing WD, it’s probably ancient.
It’s super ancient (for software) – 1.18.6.2350 must have been released in early Feb 2020… that’s pre-lockdown (well… outside Wuhan). The current public release is 1.23.5.
If history is of any reference, it needs to break real bad for them to upgrade
Are you connecting through a custom access URL (Settings > [Server Name] > Network) or just via the regular remote access connections?
Routers are still accessible from the outside via the established public port?
I’ll check my settings when I get home, but it I have the device on a reserved IP on my network then the ports are forwarded. 40000-49999 for the My Book Home and 32400 for Plex. Worked for years.
im not sure about custom access url. but i think its the regular remote access connection. I didn’t tweak any settings, except for the 32400 port, which i specifically opened eventhough it was working fine before…
After a lot of digging, I believe I’m having the exact same experience as you. I’m also running 1.18.6.2350, and it was also working fine until it randomly stopped sometime around a month ago, maybe more. However I’m using a Shield TV (running Android TV) rather than a Roku. I’m going to lay out my strange findings here so that if anyone else is looking for someone with similar issues here or on google then hopefully they’ll know they aren’t alone. And please tell me if you guys are having the same or similar but different experiences so we know if we’re going in the right direction or not.
When 1) connected to my local network, 2) with secure connections preferred, and 3) my VPN off: Then my Windows app (not Plex Media Server but the Plex for Windows app), the web app (https://app.plex.tv/desktop/), the direct web interface (http://###.###.#.###:32400/), and my Shield TV all run my content and Plex’s services (like Movies & Shows and Live TV).
Only my Shield TV failed to play Plex’s services when turning the VPN on, but it could access my content.
When 1) connected to my local network, 2) with secure connections disabled, and 3) my VPN on or off: Then my Windows app, the direct web interface, and my Shield TV all run my content and Plex’s services, but the web app failed to play my content and would only run Plex’s services.
When 1) remotely connected, 2) with secure connections disabled, and 3) my VPN off: Then my Windows app and my Shield TV run my content and Plex’s services, but the web app would only run Plex’s services while the direct web interface failed to open at all even for my settings.
And perhaps most strangely… When 1) remotely connected, 2) with secure connections preferred, and 3) my VPN off: Then, very oddly, my Windows app, my Shield TV and the web app all run my content and Plex’s services just fine (when I thought they wouldn’t), but the direct web interface again predictably failed to open settings or anything at all.
What I really want is the web app to work again because when it does it’s a preferable experience. 1) Unlike my Shield TV, I can edit my content directly within it.
2) Unlike the Windows app or my Shield TV, it allows for me to resize the webpage so the letters and other elements (e.g. the side panel) don’t seem so huge, but for others this allows fonts to be bigger for legibility. 3) Unlike the direct web interface, it has the Live TV option. So besides that it’s not a standalone app, it really is the best user experience offered when it works.
This all said, if anyone gets a solution to this problem then please reply directly to me so I can attempt it myself.
I used a 400 dollar fix and bought a Synology DS220+ with a couple of 6TB drives. Good riddance, I will never buy a NAS prepackaged with any software ever again.
Just for shifts and giggles I put that old package on there that WD forces MyCloud Home users to use and it did the same thing. So I updated to the current package and it was fixed.
Damn… Well, thank you for running that test. It seems that confirms that this is WD underperforming. Unfortunately the WD My Cloud Home is the cheapest option by a long shot. I think I spent $135-$160 for my 4TB, but definitely under $180. I haven’t had many problems, but this certainly put a bad taste in my mouth. I still can’t imagine spending any more than $200 on any device based on my limited needs, even with consideration that I might need another TB or 2.
How are you liking the Synology vs. the WD MCH? Is it a NAS? And can you at least add plugins and backup your PMS with the Synology? I once had an issue where I had to reconfigure my plex on the WD MCH and I lost everything I customized, all the genres, the custom artwork, my collections, everything. It was pretty devastating when I had more than 700 movies I had reviewed before that. Now I have 1250+, so I want to make sure whatever I use next I can back up. The idea that someday I’ll almost certainly have to put in all this work again to make my Plex functional and looking nice is daunting.
Well, the Synology has a lot more freedom to put whatever packages I want on it. MCH is fine, but it’s a little too “hands off”. I think it’s great for people who are less experienced. But once you get to medium to advanced confidence with NAS drives, I think it will become less useful for those people.
I don’t know if you can create a ghost image of your plex or not at any given point. Some of those settings are probably on Plex’s side, and some are probably on the client side.
I will say the Synology is a lot faster at getting metadata and loading up anything 4k I plan to direct play. It will transcode 4k, but you have to stay at a pretty low data rate on the receiving end.
