Remote Access Not Working

How did your preferences file get deleted? It is always created when PMS starts.

My procedure allows you to keep your machine ID and all sharing. If you do want to delete Preferences.xml (with it stopped), then starting and going through the whole setup again, this is always an option. Your actual metadata will always be there because the database was not deleted.

There are no versions from Plex prior to 1.0. Plex is in the process of making the web site so we can download versions since 1.0 but the number of versions we can download will be limited to only a few back. While this is annoying, there is logic to it. Our job as Ninjas is getting more and more difficult with all the different versions out there.

Be careful about toggling the connect/disconnect. you’ll get into the reverse-locked state I speak of where ‘green == disconnected’

It didn’t get deleted. Synology (at least the version I am on) just doesn’t allow me to open it directly from file explorer. In the screenshot above you can see that I have the Preferences file selected when I raised the context menu. Synology just says the file doesn’t exist upon being opened due to incorrect permissions.

It’s the same procedure, just a workaround for those who might have permissions problems similar to the ones I have.

Okay I just see many other threads for stuff telling me to use .96.16.6 as this seems to be the most compatible version (with things like HDHR viewer for example) with things.

Yah. The state seems finicky regardless. I restarted the Plex service and it went to disconnected again. And then copied the preferences file back once again and it fixed it. I’m just going to treat it as something about to tip over and not touch it.

I know what happened here. I presumed you’d be doing this from the Admin user or a user account on the synology which has administrative access permissions to the share
That’s why you can’t edit / get the ‘not found’
 DSM is telling you NO.

Yah, I have no idea how to do it like you are saying though.

Doing it with either the admin account or other superadmin accounts that should have access to it doesnt work.

I don’t know what the password for the plex user is, and not sure how to switch the permissions of the Plex directory to anything different than what was assigned; via SSH or anything else. Let me know if there is some other method.

User ‘plex’ has no login account so no concerns there.
As an ‘administrative’ (administrators group) user, you have all the access you need.
I go in with my regular user ‘chuck’ and I have no difficulties.

@ChuckPa I’m running into the same thing as @kinseido here

  1. When trying to edit the preferences.xml file directly in DSM File Station, I get the File or Directory Not Found error. This is when logged into DSM as ‘admin’.

  2. I stop the Plex package, download the file to my local machine, edit, then upload the new version back over the top of the old one. When I restart the Plex package and go to the web dashboard, I don’t see anything different. I don’t get asked to claim the server.

  3. Based on @kinseido comment above, I removed the PlexOnlineToken key/value pair as well. When I do that, I do get asked to claim the server on the network.

but in each case, after starting the server back up, I get the same not available outside your network message. The Server Mapping portion of that same page shows the correct IP/Port combinations and the router configuration matches it.

I’ve done some checking and think I know what’s happening. We (as users or even the ‘admin’ user) don’t have access to the Plex share at the GUI level.

I removed my access to it and got “Not found”. I granted myself access to the Plex share and I was able to access it.

Please confirm it’s that way for you. If it is, it’s one of Synology’s stupidest ‘security enhancements’ I’ve seen yet. The admin and administrative user(s) have to be explicitly given access to a share (which they can give themselves anyway)

Update: To let you and all know. I’m working with one of the devs directly on this. I can recreate it easily on my machine and then get him the information he needs. It seems to be fixed in whatever version he has but I don’t know anything else at this point. As is normal policy, I won’t know until just before you do about what’s actually in the Plex Pass build (when the release notes are published).

When I find out / can confirm, I will let you know.

Personal note: I will be on holiday these next 3 weeks. My replies will not be as timely as usual.

Hi
I had this problem after updated my Syno NAS, googled it, found this thread, followed this post, and finally Plex is working fine now

Thanks ChuckPa

The easiest way to get around this until we get a resolution is this:

  1. stop plex
  2. copy your Preferences.xml (make a backup copy)
  3. for each of these keys I list here, remove them and their associated value.
  4. save the file
  5. start plex

You’ll see it has forgotten it’s ever been online or is even part of your account. Do not worry. Because we kept the same Machine ID information, there will be no lost sharing or other features. Once associated with your account again, all will be good.

I guess I don’t understand the exact steps you’re taking. I’ve verified the following and, in each case, I’ve turned access OFF and then back ON. I still get the “File or Directory Not Found” when I try to edit the Preferences.xml file using the “Open With Text Editor” action. I’m doing this while logged into DSM as ‘admin’ and changing these settings for the ‘admin’ account.

In Control Panel –

  1. Go into Plex Share, Edit, Permissions tab. Read/Write column is checked.

  2. Go into User, ‘admin’, Edit, Permissions tab. Read/Write column is checked.

  3. Go into Group, ‘administrators’, Edit Members, verify ‘admin’ is in it, go back to Group, Edit, Permissions tab. Read/Write column is checked.

after each time toggling these off an back on, I go to File Station and navigate to the Plex share, then Library, Application Support, Plex Media Server. Select Preferences.xml, Actions button, Open with Text Editor. File or Directory Not Found.

The only way I’ve found to modify that file is to download it locally, make changes, then drag it back into File Station.

Am I missing something?

I am currently on the road (in my hotel room). When I get to my destination tomorrow and get settled, I’ll remote into my Syno and show you what I mean.

IIRC, As admin, add YOUR username to the permissions for the Plex share. I had to do that at one point long ago.

If all else fails, when I get to my destination, We’ll let Linux do it and forgive Synology’s silliness entirely.

@jdonnici you are seeing the same thing as me.

I think @ChuckPa is running an older version of Synology without the same “security enhancement.”

Copying the file out and replacing it works the same way.

Before you ‘think’ too hard and hurt yourself by assuming, Why not ask?

I can run from 0.9.9.18 -> 1.2.0 on demand. It works the same for all of them.

I’m currently running 1.2.0 on both machines

Edit: For my Linux workstation, I have 0.9.7. Any further question

Mostly cuz you’re on vacation and don’t want to bother you.

But you’re not understanding my comment. What we are talking about has nothing to do with the version of Plex.

I am running Synology DSM 6.0.2-8451 Update 1

What version are you running?

I am running the same DSM as everyone else. I also have DSM 5.2 in VM for backward compatibility development and testing

Can you please just list your version? “Same DSM as everyone else” means pretty much nothing.

You are clearly having different experiences than others with regards to file manipulation within Synology so this would be helpful information.

This specific enough for you?

Yes, the machine and I are in different time zones now.

Yes thank you. That was the only explanation I could come up with on why you are seeing different behavior.

Now I truly have no idea

Just an update
I’ve updated to the most recent download for the Synology and STILL see this same problem. Everything is configured correctly based on this thread, others, and the Plex docs.

I can reach my Synology just fine at https://nas.[domain].com:5001

https://nas.[domain].com:32400/web gives the same problems reported above and doesn’t allow for remote access in the Plex Settings.

Disappointing that there’s no official support response given that some users reported “yeah, there’s a known issue with config settings that we’re trying to track down”

With the most recent server version, I actually can get into a loop where I can see remote access enabled for a couple of seconds. Under Settings -> Remote Access, after updating to 1.2.7.2987-1bef33a for Synology:

  1. “Enable Remote Access” button is enabled. Click that
the green “accessible outside your network” label appears for 1-2 seconds. Then it turns red and reads “not available outside your network”.

  2. Just below that, “manually specify port” is checked and set to 32400. Click “Retry” button next to the port number.

  3. It spins for a second, stays with the red/nope text but then the “enable remote access” button is enabled again.

  4. Go to #1.
