[/Rant] Since the above thread was closed, I wanted to follow up. In that thread JaysPlex7 and tom80H were adamant that the problem was not on the Plex end and insisted a non-IT guy (me) go digging around within my otherwise 100% functioning router. According to them, “Doing nothing” was NOT the right answer.
Well, I “did nothing” and everything has in fact gone back to normal…at least no one has complained about reaching my server.
Please, when more than one person has a concern about Plex functionality, don’t blow them off. As a Plex Pass (i.e. paid) user, I expect better than that.
A lot of todays technology successfully makes it appear like there’s no obstacles.
When you’re hosting an own server and deal with network connectivity… you can get to a point where that gloss-over fades away and you’ll need to work some complexities out.
When it comes to remote access, there’s more players than just Plex and yourself… e.g. your home router manufacturer and their idea of what should/shouldn’t be available to you, your ISP…
Any of those can apply changes to a gear in the machinery behind your remote access setup – and each of those changes can break it.
Certainly, Plex is a player in that game too and for sure they can break things. I consider if that happens, you’ll see pandemonium here in the forum.
That being said… the most common issues we see are indeed triggered either by users themselves (e.g. due to a failed router configuration) or some of those other parties (e.g. an ISP no longer assigning publicly routable IPv4 addresses to their customers.
… and sometimes they undo such changes and it appears like things magically work out again.
Certainly not trying to blow you (or others) off – apologies if it came out like that… just saying technology is more complicated than it might appear on the outside.
The purpose of the troubleshooting is primarily to pin down what’s causing an individual user’s / server’s remote access issue. Without knowing that, it’s hard to fix any of those.
[edit]
Just keep in mind that neither JaysPlex7 nor myself are “Plex”… just some other forum users.
They do, you will often see Staff posting here on the forum. “Doing nothing” was NOT the right answer. They are correct, something in your setup stack was not working. That could have been anything from the PC to a firewall or even your DNS, or something further up stream. When they said it wasnt a Plex issue they were probably correct. Had it been a plex issue more people would have been affected. The comment about doing nothing goes back to a quote that Einstein said: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
You were offered support and you said thanks but no thanks. You’re the one who told everybody else to take a hike so I’m not sure why you feel like you were ignored
Could Plex have been responsible for your problem? I suppose anything is possible but it happens so infrequently that nobody is going to accept that as fact when the user isn’t interested in doing troubleshooting step number 1
Your idea of support seems to be someone at Plex headquarters flipping a switch to correct this issue for you
I realize you don’t believe what you’re being told but the users you’re speaking to here knowledgeable and have read 1000’s of posts on this topic
It doesn’t matter what kind of badge someone has next to their name if you choose to ignore what they say
I apologize then If I was expecting too much. I do appreciate the help that I and others get from this community.
The reason I stopped reading (re: the quote) is because I had no clue what it was telling me to do, not because I wasn’t interested. My wife works from home. The VERY last thing I can do is disrupt the internet link. I simply could not risk (as a NON-IT guy) to go digging around inside a router to figure out why something that was working fine suddenly stopped. I did that before…it took 2 weeks before the router was un-fargled and working again. I will point out that I did nothing and it started working again. As an engineer I doubt my router broke itself and then fixed itself.
