Remote Access suddenly not working

Server Version#: Version 1.32.1.6999
Player Version#: N/A

Plex settings is giving me an error, saying “Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.” It was working yesterday, then my server dropped offline so I had to close it and restart it, and this popped up. I’ve had random, intermittent issues with this before and it drives me crazy.

What do I do to fix this?

Did you already have a look at the related troubleshooting support article?

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200931138-troubleshooting-remote-access/

There’s also a guide with some more details on how to approach troubleshooting remote access issues.

Thanks, but that support page might as well be in Chinese. All those suggestions were never applied before and it worked fine. As soon as that page tells me to go into my router and change technical parameters I stop reading, because, well, it’s worked before with the current settings. From there that page only gets more complicated. I reiterate…it worked fine last week and nothing in my router or on my network has changed.

Things on your network or computer can change without any purposeful interaction on your part.

If it was working before without you doing anything it was probably using UPnP. Think of UPnP as a doorman who automatically opens up any available door Plex wants to use to get outside your house. Besides being unreliable it’s generally considered somewhat unsafe

This is why you’ve had so many problems

You have to be willing to read the support article and open up your router if you want anyone to help you

When you read these articles sometimes you just have to go step by step. If you try and read the whole thing and digest everything at once you get overwhelmed

Try and start with this
Don’t change anything, for now you’re just looking around

Open your router and look under the LAN settings

Look for anything that says “Manually Assigned IP or Port Forwarding”

Take a screen shot of it and put it in your next post

Thanks. Not that I’m unwilling to read…I simply don’t understand this stuff

[I like to think I’m a reasonably intelligent person (I am an engineer) but I’m convinced that IT folks are from another planet. Nothing is intuitive and everything requires an IT degree. And if I’m struggling, I can see why the average person avoids stuff like this.]

As for your suggestion, I can find nothing regarding port forwarding. Can’t even figure which page (of very many) that would be of any help.

FYI I have a Linksys Mesh router. And everything is working. Not willing to screw that up.

I’m not familiar with those particular models.
This page might give you some hints on how to get to the related configuration of your router.

Dont do nothing!

ITS PLEX SIDE AGAIN! - happens way to often, almost never on the stat page.

Some people are on mine, cant see them, others are on, and i see them and it works, and rest cant run without constant stopping (cant see them either)

not sure where you take this from.
so far we’ve been talking about troubleshooting… but maybe you know the OP’s network setup, ISP backend and other interferences and can shed some light on how it’s alright. Most complaints I’ve seen over the last years were related to some background changes triggered by an ISP or some other providers opting to block ports to “manage” their network or restrict perceived violations.

i take it from my own plex server that is a total mess, again REMOTE ACCESS!!! - and its not in this end, again its plex.tv server side remote access crap, you really need to fix it once and for all, or stop this “must go over your server” after people have been added to a server

The problem is there every week for some periode, most dont even get on the STAT page, so it looks better, and when it do, its 8-10h after it starts, useless, always a battle here, its never plex server, always our computers … but news flash i dont change anything, and it works again, when somebody at plex puts back the RJ45 cable he stumbled over

Remote access is almost never a Plex issue. Over several years I’ve only seen one instance of that and it was fixed within an hour.

It’s always specific to you and your network. Suggesting he do nothing when your remote access doesn’t work correctly seems counterintuitive

Have you posted your own thread asking for assistance with your problem? What did you do according to the troubleshooting thread tom posted a link to?

Your advice is do NOTHING, so I’m guessing NOTHING

I have to agree with DKdude…This happens occasionally and then the problem magically goes away [Nothing has changed on my end so I don’t think this is where the problem is]

This time I finally decided to ask about it and I’m told to dig into an otherwise perfectly functional router. Sorry, that just risks messing it up for everything and everyone else. I can’t do that.

I know you guys agree with each other. That’s why neither one of your remote access is working properly

Yes, you might have to google somethings about your router so you’re not scared of it

“How to set up a static ip or how do I port forward a Linkxys mesh router”

Learn about it and fix it or wait for it to magically start working again. There’s not a 3rd option
