Remote access to new server / library?

Server Version#:???
Player Version#: 1.35.1.2632-c6783c78

Hi all.

Noob connection question: I’m trying to remotely connect to a friends new server, and I can’t find any info on how I, as a remote user, can add his new server to my Plex app. I literally can’t find the ‘add’ button!

I’m using the desktop app on a Mac laptop, app version 1.35.1.2632-c6783c78. I have no idea what hardware or software he is running on the server side of things. I had a pinned shortcut under ‘more’ in my app to his old server, that server then went the way of the dodo, and now he has a new one. I’m told I can connect to the new server by hitting ‘add’. That is all the info I have. Not sure if adding servers is done through the app or by logging in online, but either way have gotten stuck.

Hope that all makes sense. Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is no need for that.
Once your account has been invited to your friend’s server, you first have to accept the invitation.
You can do this on this page: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/users-sharing

After you have accepted, the new libraries are either automatically added to your left side bar.
Or you can add them yourself in other clients.

Thank you for the response!

Sooooo, I need him to send me an invite to the new server? I can’t connect to the new one without an invite? There is no other way for me to connect?

Can you tell me more about this? What are the ‘other clients’?

If he is already sharing an older server of his with you, it is as easy as going to the first link above,
clicking on your username in the list,
switching to the “Libraries” tab (already selected by default),
“Edit”,
Then tick all the libraries on the new server and clear the check boxes on the old server.

You cannot.

I am referring to “Plex clients”. This term doesn’t mean “customer”. It is used when describing a “server-client” network architecture, which is what Plex actually is.

There is not only the Plex Web app. You can use many device types as a way to watch/listen to your Plex media.
Smart TVs, “streaming plugs” (Roku, FireTV, Chromecast), set top boxes (nVidia Shield Pro and many other generic “Android TV” devices), game consoles (Xbox, Playstation), mobile phones and tablets (both Apple and Android mobile).

Hi Otto

Thanks for all your help, it is really appreciated.

Once I follow that first link, I can’t click on my user name, but I can click on his user name. When I do click on his user name it takes me to ‘shared libraries’ and ‘shared media’, but it tells me nothing has been shared with me… I’m guessing my best option is to ask for a fresh invite.

Again, many thanks!

There is no need for a new invitation.
What you are seeing on that page is different from what he sees on that page. You are using different Plex user accounts with potentially different shared users, different servers, different number of servers etc.pp.

Hmmm, in which case I am a little bit lost…

Going to that first link doesn’t give me anything I can click on with regards libraries that I can edit. My name doesn’t lead me anywhere, it doesn’t click. His username takes me through to ‘shared libraries’ and ‘shared media’, but it tells me nothing has been shared with me… so, still nothing for me to click on to ‘edit’ as such.

You’ve said I don’t need an invitation to connect to his new server, but did you not say earlier that I cannot connect to his new server without an invitation?

Just to be clear, I’m a few miles away from him and don’t have access to his server or account in any way shape or form.

Is there something I’m not doing? Something he needs to do?

Any help is greatly appreciated :+1:

You can do nothing, as you are not the owner of his server.
Only he can grant you access permission to his new server.

Ah, I think the confusion here is on my part, I though that the ‘invite’ was essentially the way he would grant me access to the server. As in he would ‘invite me to use the new server’ etc.
