Remote access working for 1 server, not another

My MacBook Pro and Shield Pro (2017 model) are both setup as a Plex Server.

As long as my MacBook isn’t sleeping, I can remotely access my MacBook Pro server, however I am never able to remotely access my Shield server.

I have enabled remote access on both servers by clicking the “Enable Remote Access” button for each server, and the button now displays “Disable Remote Access” for both servers.

I can’t see my “Remote Access” settings for the MacBook Pro server right now since I’m away from home and my MacBook is currently sleeping, but the “Remote Access” for the MacBook Pro displays something like “You have remote access” or something like that. For my Shield Pro, it says “Not available outside your network. Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network Learn more”.

When I click on the “Learn More” link, it tells me to check if my Router is capable of NAT-PMP or UPnP, and to determine if there’s a double-NAT problem.

I checked my Router, and it supports NAT-PMP and the option is selected. Furthermore, if the router was the issue, or if I had a double-NAT, then I shouldn’t be able to remotely access ANY of my servers EVER (which I can, in some cases), so that eliminates my router and double-NAT as the cause of the problem.

Is there a common cause for not being able to remotely access Shields? Does everyone who remotely accesses their Shield need to “forward the port”?

I haven’t yet tried the “Manual Port Forwards for Multiple Servers” setup listed on the Troubleshooting Remote Access page, but maybe that’s what I need to do to make all of this work.

I will hazard a guess and say it’s the shield. I have a 16gb and a pro (2015) and both drop remote access randomly and reboot randomly ( around once or twice a day).

While yours does not connect at all i would still say my random dropouts and your issues are both from the shields’ lousy implementation of plex.
And it’s been like it for 10 months now
I have a Win10 Skull NUC that does NOT have the same issue!

Short answer do not rely on your shield being your #1 PMS …

Are both server set to use Port 32400?
You need to change at least one of them.

I have it setup this way in my NAT:

Internet --> 32400 --> Plex Server 1 on 32400
Internet --> 32401 --> Plex Server 2 on 32400

You can specify the remote port in the settings.

I am assuming that both are set to use the same port, as I didn’t change anything to make each use a unique port.

I tried last night to follow the instructions in the “Manual Port Forwards for Multiple Servers” on the Troubleshooting Remote Access page, but somehow I completely screwed up my network, lost a bunch of data on my computer and had to restore my MacBook to a backup.

All of that was caused simply by trying to set a static IP by MAC Address for the Shield Pro.

Now I can’t even access any of my SSID’s on any device, and it says my network password is wrong on every device that was previously setup and accessing those SSID’s perfectly fine for years without a change in password.

So tonight I need to do a reset to manufacturer defaults and completely re-setup my router. That’s gonna be a Giant PITA because it’s also my backup disk (Apple Time Machine).

Once I regain access to my SSID’s, I’m going to try following those instructions again. I hope I don’t experience this mess twice.

As invested as I am in the Apple Echosystem (iPhones, iPads, MacBook, AppleTV) i refuse to use their routers, they have really tried to oversimplify the setup to where it is almost impossible to customize and attempting to do so causes issues.

I use to have an apple router that i ended up using as a simple access point with a PFSense router (software router).
I have since sold it and replaced my access points with Ubiquiti Networks Unifi.
I wouldn’t go back.
