No, no Jumbo packs, standard MTU 1500 (set to automatic in network settings)
Restarted PMS now with new DNS from nibbles, keep you posted
26min tick tock my god
Yes, time is up again, result is the same, after half an hour PMS goes unresponsive and remote access is down again. I wonder why with port 32400 it lasts for half an hour, if I change to port 32420 remote access lasts for about an hour… And yes, I tested it twice because I could not believe it myself!
All right I’m not done yet.
- Leave the Public DNS in there.
- Start PMS and Disable Remote access
- Let PMS run for 5 min so it’s nice and idle.
- Quit PMS
- Open a terminal and start PMS with this command
"/Applications/Plex Media Server.app/Contents/MacOS/Plex Media Server"
- Leave the terminal open and don’t type anything (it’s not listening for you to do that).
- In terminal MacOS will display errors that won’t be caught in the Plex logs.
- After it crashes, copy any terminal output and paste it into a </> code block in your reply. The button for that is above the editor.
I forgot that trick till now someone taught me. There’s also console logging we can manage.
Launchpad → Other → Console → Your Mac’s Name → search for Plex → Hit start
MacOS logs wills scroll bye when there’s activity with PMS. Sometimes you have click Now if you interrupted the scroll.
the regularity indicates a timed process. The relationship to port numbers indicates it’s related to your router / vpn / firewall / network security feature. Try port 80 at some point.
OK, PMS seem to crash anyways after half an hour even with remote access disabled, result is still the same, it goes unresponsive and the server is not even reachable over 127.0.0.1:32400 anymore…
Unfortunaly in my humble opinion Terminal did not log any errors, only thing i got is this:

I’m getting slowly devasted somehow now… ![]()
I know how it gets. Let’s keep trying whenever you’re ready.
Oh I see nothing showed up I found the very last line. Dang.
Search Apple for Mac Hardware Diagnostics. Might as well check while we all have a think.
There must be something logged in your MacOS Console. Let us know what you find.
Sometimes narrowing it down to Errors & Faults is plenty.
Crash Reports - Make you have in your **Settings → Server → General **
Send crash reports to Plex
and Save Changes.
We’ll have to ask and see if Plex is getting any.
Thanks, sending crash reports is already activated.
Console output is to large to post here, to many characters. may I send it to you as textfile via PN or should I post only the last part of it here?
Anyway, will send/post tomorrow, have to sleep now, it’s late again… Thank you all for your endless will to help, much appreciated! I hope we can fix this soon!
Right click on the text file and choose Compress.
If the output covers a crash, then drop it into the topic or PM me, sure.
Thanks, here’s the console output. I’m not seeing any errors, maybe some of you will…
plex console.zip (15.4 KB)
Thanks I didn’t know what to expect from it. Maybe the Plex term was too restrictive.
How do you know that PMS crashed? I’m wondering if it’s just unresponsive while the process is still running.
Thanks for getting back so soon, you seem to never rest! ![]()
Yes, Plex ist unresponsiv/unreachable, but process still alive. As you can see in screenshot I notice plex is unresponsive when i try to reach it with it’s local IP after half an hour. I can also quit it normaly and restart it for another half an hour.
EDIT: Also tested your hypothesis about a damaged DB and took one from before I restarted my M1 Mac on last Friday. After restart the issue started to occur… Long story short: The issue persists even with older DB from Backup and remote access still off…
Thank you for doing the DB Replace test. It still crashes.
Ok we could probably muddle through copying your entire current server (3 folders, a file, and the app) to a backup location, then do a complete uninstall, and install a test Plex server to see if that crashes after ½ hour. We have to be able to bracket this to whatever is unique about your setup, like Chuck said. Does your hardware run a new server with 3 movies sort of question.
I install test servers on a Mac several times a week. It’s not bad at all. I wrote a script to automate uninstalling. ChuckPA wrote a script to Repair/Replace/Check your database on Linux, and I ported that to the Mac. You could be in worse shape. Where is that Titanic emojii.
Plex makes caches for a lot of things like art. Maybe it’s just a corrupt temporary file.
Reinstalling will clean all that out.
You probably want to also run an Apple Hardware Diagnostics. Plex suggests solving crashes by removing everything connected to the Mac that’s not needed for PMS, like a USB printer etc.
I fell asleep a couple of time typing this ![]()
see you in a while.
OK, I do worry about this step but will do it. Which files and folders do I have to backup? I did go by this guide https://support.plex.tv/articles/202915258-where-is-the-plex-media-server-data-directory-located/ but I do not want to backup to much and maybe backing up this strange behaviour in the process too…
I’ve backuped the Preferences file and the DB so far, what else?
EDIT: Did a complete uninstall of Plex, made a restart and installed PMS again but problem persists, PMS goes unresponsive
Also unplugged all devices not needed for PMS, no change.
EDIT 2: Did a Test on same machine different user account, result stays the same… Alsod did Hardware Diagnostics, no problems found. Only thing I see left at the moment is to completely setup MacOS an Plex from scratch again and hoping that the issue will be gone then… Or do you guys have any ideas left?
EDIT 3: Just heard back from my ISP: No CGNAT or Port blocking. But I think it’s clear somehow, that its PMS and not my network connection…
Thanks!
So it continues with a clean install.
For reference, Plex has PMS Uninstall Instructions in their articles.
You would have to do all of them, and I made a script to automate it.
Script to Completely Uninstall PMS for Mac
#!/bin/bash
rm -rf /Applications/Plex\ Media\ Server.app && echo '[1/5] deleted the app'
rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist && echo '[2/5] deleted the plist'
rm -rf ~/Library/Logs/Plex\ Media\ Server && echo '[3/5] deleted the logs'
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/PlexMediaServer && echo '[4/5] deleted the caches'
rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server && echo '[5/5] deleted the application support'
echo 'Two manual steps are required to remove all traces of PMS on your Mac.'
echo ' * Use the link to remove the Mac from your Authorized Devices - Server.'
echo ' * Empty your Trash and restart the Mac.'
echo ' '
echo ' https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/devices/pms'
echo ' '
I wouldn’t reinstall MacOS just yet. I would ask Apple for help to identify the cause.
Tell them you have an app that used to work but becomes unresponsive every 30min.
Tell them you don’t remember changing anything.
Tell them you completely uninstalled it and reinstalled it with the same result.
Tell them the app is known to work on your Hardware and MacOS. I use it every day.
Tell them we need help finding any system message telling us what’s wrong.
We might get lucky.
If I decided to try a fresh install of MacOS, I would clone my Mac hard drive using SuperDuper, then I’d wipe it and reinstall MacOS and PMS to see if that fixed the issue. If not then restore the Clone. No reason to nuke your system.
Good luck!
Hello again
I did already uninstall PMS completely using the official uninstall instructions from Plex. It did a clean install twice just to verify, but result was still the same…
I don’t have any experience reaching out to Apple regarding Software issues. How is this done best? Is there a dedicated contact for such things?
Already have TimeMachine Backup, I would first go back to an installation from TimeMachine before this issue occured, if it not work then I would try a reinstall of MacOS and PMS…
Hey good morning ![]()
All good ideas with Time Machine. It’s very slow.
Support with Apple is easy for new computers or people with Apple Care.
Apple Menu (
) → About This Mac → Support → Get Support …
Usually you’ll get to chat with someone who’s very good.
OK, it’s only by call here with Apple in Switzerland…
But I have other news: Installed PMS on my daily work machine which is an MacMini M1 with Monterey also and there are no crashes with PMS 1.25.4.5426!
I’m not sure what to do next. Upgrade PMS on my work machine to see if it still works or roll back to 1.25.4.5426 on my Server OR going for a fresh install of MacOS and PMS on my server?
EDIT: OK, rollback on Server to 1.25.4.5426 did not work, PMS hangs on starting up…
OK, PMS seem to be running again now, knocking on wood! Throwing Tautulli and ombi into the mix slowly and hoping that they have no impact, at least they should not in my humble opinion…
In case someone else experiences this odd issue I had (PMS goes unresponsive after a while), here are some instructions on what I did under MacOS Monterey:
- Do a backup of your PMS Data Directory and Preferences (https://support.plex.tv/articles/201539237-backing-up-plex-media-server-data/), then completely uninstall PMS (https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/)
- To be on the safe side, do a Backup with TimeMachine or some other substitute backup solution.
- Shutdown computer
- For M1-machines like mine press and hold power button until it boots into Recovery mode (if you don’t have a M1-Mac, the procedure is somewhat different: Verwenden von macOS-Wiederherstellung auf einem Intel-basierten Mac - Apple Support (CH)).
- Reinstall MacOS on your system hdd but without deleting your user account data
- Let it finish until machine restarts and boots into system again.
- Put your Backup of PMS Data Directory and preferences back into their designated place
- Reinstall PMS and cross fingers it will run smoothly again.
I dont’t know what it was or why it happened, but there seemed to be some issue with MacOS i presume, altough I did not change anything. I will closely monitoring it all now for a while and if there are any new insights, I will post here again, but for now I’m hoping the issue has been resolved since PMS runs smoothly again since yesterday.
again knocking on wood
Many thanks to all involved here for their endless help and support!
