Remote Access - Wrong Private IP Address

Server Version#:1.13.9.5456-ecd600442
Player Version#:

Appreciate the help in advance.

I’m trying to get PMS setup for remote access. I have two network interfaces to my NAS, one over 1GB copper and another over 10GB SFP+ DAC. The 10GB connection is only for a connection from my NAS to my server, whereas the 1GB connection has access to the internet.

PMS is showing the 10GB IP address (192.168.10.x) as my Private IP and I don’t see anyway to change to the 1GB connection (192.168.2.x). I thought about disabling the 10GB connection during installation but wasn’t sure if Plex would just detect it later after I re-enabled it.

Appreciate any help!

There’s an advanced setting that should help with this (this feature was introduced with PMS v1.13.9 – latest public release)…
Please check out Settings > Network > Preferred network interface

However there’s also been an issue with the web interface displaying the wrong IP address (fixed in PMS v1.14.0 – currently only available via the beta update channel, restricted to Plex Pass users)

Thanks, I missed that setting.

I selected my preferred network, logged out and restarted PMS but Remote Access is still showing the unpreferred Private IP. Perhaps as you suggest I’ll have to wait for the fix in v1.14.0 after it leaves the beta.

well… key question is… does it use the right interface despite displaying the wrong one?
from the release notes, 1.14.0 will only fix displaying the wrong value.

Sorry, I read your original post too fast.

I’ve got the appropriate port forward rules in my router and I tested Remote Access again but it continues to fail. Because of the bug I can’t for certain say it’s displaying the incorrect IP address as maybe something else is preventing it from working.

My NAS has a plex plugin that works for remote access but I was hoping to move the load off to a more powerful system for transcoding, however something seems to be preventing it from working in Windows.

Got any other ideas? I can’t figure out why remote access for Plex would work from my NAS but not from PMS via windows.

do you specify different public ports for the different servers in your home network?

Example:

  • public port 32398 forwards to NAS at port 32400
  • public port 32399 forwards to Windows Server at port 32400

And both Plex Media Servers configured accordingly under Settings > Remote Access > Manually specify public port (NAS referring to 32398, Windows Server referring to 32399 – as per the example above; of course based on your actual configuration)?

I don’t actually have an entry for plex on my NAS though I haven’t had any issues with it.
So I only have one port forwarded and pointed to PMS on Windows.

So can I assume that private IP address PMS is displaying is correct? It’s still showing my 10GB network address and I can’t think of anything else that would be preventing remote access.

Crickets… so much for support.

VPN seems to be the only solution which is only adequate for certain devices (PC & smartphones) and unfortunately friends/family stuck with smart TVs will be out of luck.

bump back to the top

FYI if anyone has this problem in the future, don’t trust Plex as there seem to be multiple bugs associated with both showing the incorrect IP address as well as when Plex tells you that your server is not accessible via Plex. I only found this out by digging through the forums and found this post where @OttoKerner mentions the bug.

After troubleshooting this for over a week with little help, it turns out I was chasing a ghost that didn’t exist.

Hi grocerylist. It’s possible that you are troubleshooting in the wrong area. There are a tone of questions to ask for getting to the right place, but I expect that you have a routing issue especially since your public IP is showing a private IP address (cascading routers). Two things to check 1) can you launch plex from the plex.tv account and 2) what IP does this page give: http://plex.tv/pms/:/ip
