Remote connection not working with Plex

Server Version#: Version 1.21.1.3876
Player Version#:

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are all.

I needed some help with my Plex remote connection issues. I understand that there have been many discussions around this in the forum but none of the one I came across has a solution to this issue listed. most of the posts are trial which I tried and have failed in succeeding. I am hoping that I can get some assistance from anyone who has been on the same boat/or knows the solution to this painful yet frustrating issue :frowning:

Below is the Pic that would show that I have access remotely yet I cant access my library outside my local network such as on phone, tablet etc.

have tried a whole bunch of things as

  • restarting phone
  • uninstall/reinstall app
  • re-install plex server (fixes the issue for a short while but goes off again)
  • changing devices

I do have a manual port forwarding set up with TCP/UDP allowed and can confirm that it is working as I checked on the site https://canyouseeme.org/ and on Open Port Check Tool - Test Port Forwarding on Your Router
both locations show that the port is open and is working.
I have spoken to my ISP and they advised that there nothing they can help as the ports unblocked.
Checked my routers UPnP set up its enabled tried toggling them off and then back on again as it states in the troubleshooting document from Plex.
checked on http://whatismyip.host/ and can confirm I dont have double Nat
My public IP is not in the CGNAT range of 100.64.0.0 - 100.127.255.255 either.

The issue that I have is more so about stability in accessing my library. I purchased a Plex pass so I could access my contents remotely and I dont see any benefit out of it as yet. Another frustrating issue I notice is that at times the remote connection drops out too and will show that Plex is not available outside your network (I have to disable and re-enable the remote access service for it to work).

Apologies for the long frustrated post. Has anyone been able to fix this issue ?

Thank you in advance for understanding and helping me with my issue.

Do you have any 3rd party utilities that may be causing this issue? Anti-virus/network program?

@Cy1n1d3,

If your ISP is not blocking port 32400 (or whatever port you assigned externally), your router is using port 32400 internally to connect to PMS, and you state you can connect occasionally after a fresh install, then you have a configuration issue most likely at the router.

Have you reviewed the https://support.plex.tv/articles/200931138-troubleshooting-remote-access/?utm_campaign=Plex%20Apps&utm_medium=Plex%20Web&utm_source=Plex%20Apps help page? This is a very helpful troubleshooting tool.

I see you stated, “Checked my routers UPnP set up its enabled…” This is a known issue. You need to properly NAT the IP and port to the outside. Review your router manual or search for a how-to video on YouTube.

Good luck and let us know how the troubleshooting goes.

Hi @NewPlaza.
Yes I do have a norton antivirus and I have an inbound firewall rule set to allow connection on the port as tcp/udp  still the same

Still… Check your Norton logs… Just incase its doing something fishy.

Hi @Brad_S,
Thank you for the reply
Yes I have reviewed this document and have followed the steps outlined there and can confirm that the batting is done correctly as I got on the phn with my ISP technical team and had them review my settings on the modem. I use a netcom 19 mesh router so it’s fairly easy to set up natting on it with their documentation.

Question: how could it be a configuration issue when the connection is in place for some time at times it’s just 1hr or so and at times it can last up to a day as well

If it’s a config and something sync in the back ground I would say its acceptable to say that we can reproduce the issue however here the issue is stability where it works for a random timeframe and then stops working. That’s the part which is frustrating me in identifying the root issue :sob:

Will do and see if I can find anything will let you know. Upon glancing it earlier today I couldn’t see anything but surely will dig in again and post what I find.

The configuration issue I was talking about was on your router. You had stated, 'Checked my routers UPnP set up its enabled" and UPnP is a known issue as it acts flaky at times.

When I was using a wireless router/firewall I originally had UPnP enabled and it was working. But over the years with Plex and various other factors such as firmware upgrades, it became flaky and I disabled it.

Today I have a Zyxel firewall and I have a NAT for the outside which is using port 32400.

So my advice at this point would be to disable UPnP and see if that resolves the issue. If that does not work, we can try other steps.

Cheers and stay safe!

@NewPlaza
Had a chance to go through the logs. I also created a rule to monitor when everytime a connection is made on my port. Could clearly see that the connection is passed and allowed so 100% sure it’s not my firewall. However, it could perhaps be as @Brad_S mentioned that the UPnP is flaky at times. I didn’t know about it, I was pretty much following what the document stated. so thank you @Brad_S.
Surprisingly today my Plex has started working as normal without me touching it which is why I wonder if it could be what Brad suggested. I have disabled UPnP this evening. now will see how long it stays stable outside my local N/W Thank you again guys for all the help and feedback.
