Server Version#: 1.13.8.5395 (latest)
Player Version#: Varies, latest LG and Web Client
I have tried remotely playing streaming media and the quality is always very poor. There isn’t any buffering issues, but I cannot change the quality above 328p. Are there any limitations server-side in settings that could be causing this? For instance, when I stream a file (direct play or transcode, doesn’t matter) in various players such as the web client or an LG smart tv app, I get “Convert 0.7 Mbps, 328p” as the highest setting under quality, even though the media file is 1080p.
Some specs around the server:
-VM on ESX not doing much else:
-Intel Xeon D-1521 @ 2.40 (Passmark is 6980) - 4 cpu allotted
-8 GB RAM
-Storage disks are in a RAID 6
-200 megabit down, 11 megabit up (and shows the same while streaming movie)
-Ubuntu 14.04
On the client side, I have 800 megabit up and down at one site, and 100 down and 10 up on the other site where tested. Both sites experience the same issue, so I feel that the problem is server side.
In testing, the Plex server is only streaming a single file, and when looking into bandwidth usage, there is so little going on that iftop doesn’t even show a bar. CPU utilization is around 80% per htop and goes significantly lower on different media types. When dragging and dropping files to/from the server, I get around 80 megabyte transfer speed. It seems like network, cpu, and disk activity are all fine and should be more than capable of streaming several, let alone one, HD file.
Is there anything else to look at? Thank you
