I had a badly named movie file. I followed steps in this article and renamed the file and then updated the library.
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201019537-Rename-a-badly-named-file
By the way, there is no re-scan button in the web interface so I clicked ‘Update Library’ button.
Nothing changed: the movie still has incorrect title and poster.
I tried to move the file to another folder, update the library, move the file back and update again. The movie still gets added with incorrect title.
Version 1.0.2.2413
Movie info XML is attached.
Can you help?
Thanks for pointing that out!
Written up and submitted to the folks to fix.
Now, to help your issue,
move the movie (and it’s folder) away from where plex can see it then:
- Update the library (let it finish)
- Empty trash
- Clean Bundles (let this finish too)
- Move the movie back
- Update the library
Thank you Chuck. Unfortunately no, it didn’t help. The movie still returned back with same incorrect title and poster, even after emptying trash and cleaning bundles.
Ok. Now it unfortunately is time to get your fingers dirty.
In the same way you can tag a MP4 or MP3, you can also tag a AVI. Plex will see this.
I did a quick search for you and came up with this. I don’t know its credibility or if there’s better.
I’m suggesting find a way to be certain there is no embedded ‘Title’ or ‘Name’ tags.

I say this because after doing what you’ve done, the only source is what’s in the file itself.
I checked the file with abcAVI tool and it has no tags at all.
I just wanted to make sure I use the right channel to raise support requests. Do I just ask a question on the forum?
Try to rename the file to either
Alvin and the Chipmunks 3 Chipwrecked (2011).avi
or
Элвин и бурундуки 3 (2011).avi
then perform the Plex Dance
be sure to perform it correctly, in the right order with plenty of time between the steps.
“Empty trash” means the Library option within Plex, not the Trashcan of your PC operating system!
If this still doesn’t work, use the .nfo file trick. The IMDb ID for “Alvin and the Chipmunks 3” is tt1615918
