Restarting Plex for Oculus Quest Request

Long time Plex user and Plex Pass member…I also would like to throw in support for a Plex app on Quest.

I work in the AR/VR space so know the hesitancy with supporting VR at this stage. VR has been overhyped for last 10 years. However, I recently purchased a Quest 2 and can say this is the mass market device for VR that will help it take off. I too was disappointed when I saw there wasn’t a Plex app on there.

In Quest, there’s an app called Skybox that allows DNLA to pull your movies into their app to watch. They charge $9.99 USD for their app. You could easily charge the same amount for Plex on Quest and I would happily pay for it. I’m assuming others would as well as there aren’t any good personal media streaming apps on Oculus yet.

I wish a Plex VR app for my Quest 2. Please. :pensive:

I’ve actually found using Virtual Desktop and then using my normal browser with plex.tv is a better experience than using the Quest browser or FirefoxVR.

Makes for a great experience for my 3D content.

Bumping/adding my vote for an Oculus Quest 2 app.

I use Netflix and Amazon Prime in my Quest and I badly want to be able to use Plex built-in as easily.

For now I also use Virtual Desktop and stream from another PC, but adding support for Oculus should be as easy as making an Android or iOS version. It would be much better to run it locally.

Just got an Oculus Quest 2 as well; would love to see Plex own the space. I understand Plex is not supporting VR at this time; but it would be great to hear why.

Lifetime Plex Pass (early supporter)–I would pay for an Oculus Plex app. I would gladly alpha/beta test it and give feedback.

Gutted. Came here to find out about the Plex VR app for the Quest 2 as I was planning on getting one in a couple of months when my bonus comes through.

I have a couple of VR games I may play but the main usage was going to be watching 3D/VR movies directly from my current Plex library using a familiar interface which would make it viable for the kids to use. DNLA is not really an option.

Some of the recent decisons/changes made by the Plex team really are perplexing.

I agree. I was able to use the native Plex app on Oculus Go, and it was a wonderful experience. Oculus allows running Go apps on Quest, but the Plex developer has not enabled this. That’s the frustrating part.

I agree as well. I consistently used Plex on my Oculus Go, so when I sold it and upgraded to the Oculus Quest 2, I naturally assumed that Plex would be waiting there for me to install.
When I couldn’t find it, I died a little.
We need the Plex for Oculus Quest app!
I may cancel my Plex membership if I can’t use it on VR as it’s why I bought it in the first place!

I still use my Go and the Plex VR app regularly. I now have Quest/Quest 2 and would love to see this app ported to it.
Even just a way to side load it would be sufficient.

With the release of PWA (progresive web app) support on the Oculus Quest Platform

This would mean a better chance to allow Plex on the envirment

Will Plex Devs look at this.?

With the recent release of 2D apps for Oculus Quest, this is another way a Plex app could be implemented on the platform, if it turns out Plex VR is not feasible (even though IMO Plex VR would be a superior choice if available).

Plex, your losing out on a major opportunity to enhance the user experiences using plex on vr/ar. Please envision friends and family watching and interacting on meta plex vr.
The vr/ar push is being restored.
I would hate to see plex miss out on a way to spearhead the future of personal and broadcast media entertainment.
Please reboot the old program, throw some devs with some vision and talent on it. Charge a nominal fee.
I have a few ideas on how to enhance the look and feel if interested.

well if you wont support it, can you at least allow the app source code to be released so someone else can port the app to the quest 2

Please, Plex devs, do not spend your time working on this! Anyone who has a VR headset knows you can simply load a browser and access Plex. There is also Bigscreen VR, which is free, and allows for a great social media viewing experience. A Plex VR app would be unnecessary. I vote no on this, as a lifetime Plex Pass customer who is more interested in seeing development and support in other areas.

Definitely a vote for this.

I’m not in the US, and so all the things you’ve added since I bought my Lifetime pass a couple of years ago are completely useless to me.

I would, however, pay extra for a proper Plex VR implementation in the Oculus/Meta Quest 2. You can do it through the browser after a fashion, but it’s very sub-optimal, since it doesn’t recognise 3D movies. You can even sideload the Go app as well I believe, but I’ve never got that to work.

Please. VR is huge and only getting bigger. I think this would be a very worthwhile use of your time. Thanks.

Hell, if they have no intention of continuing support for the current Plex VR, they should AT LEAST remove the entitlement check so that Quest users can sideload it onto their devices. At this moment, that’s the ONLY thing keeping users from using this on their Quest 2.

To clarify, I own Plex VR, got it off the Oculus Store the moment I set up my OGO, however after watching logcat on my Quest 2 while attempting to start the sideloaded APK of Plex VR, I receive entitlement check failure messages (only in logcat, I do not see them on screen, it just crashes). Seems that the system on the Quest 2 cannot see licenses for Oculus Go applications, and that’s unfortunate.

Honestly, I don’t even care if they update Plex VR, I’d just like to use the application I purchased from the Oculus Store on my Go, on my Quest 2.

+1 please bring us an app on Oculus quest

I do not get the point about plex becoming a service for streaming free crappy movies and losing its roots about being an universal player available on any platform…
Are you forgeting your users?

+1 Please bring Plex to quest platform. I record 360 Videos every day and find it a shame your platform which did show interest in VR appears to be making no effort to remain relevant. Plex is in my rear view mirror until 360/180/3D content is supported. :v:
