I have a movie that is divided into four files. I have followed the Plex file naming convention for multi-part movies, and plex does recognize and stack the files as a single item in the player/library.
However, when I resume playback after a break (e.g., the next day or, or after having watched another movie/show) the playback resumes from the correct minute/second position but not from the correct part of the movie.
I am currently midway through part 3, but when I resumed playback, the player began playing from midway through part 1.
The reason I am reluctant to merge the files is that at the end of each file there is a “continued on disc X” message. Cutting that message at each occurrence would be an option (not sure if that’s a trivial procedure when using mkvmerge?), but I am surprised that Plex cannot remember the position of both part and time of a stacked movie.
MKVToolNix has options to cut the individual files by specifying a chapter, frame or timecode. Depending how your source files are handling the „continue on disc x“ messages, this can be very trivial or require some tinkering
From what I remember it used to be capable to do that…
Potential pitfalls are some naming glitches where Plex simply treats the different parts as different quality versions of the same movie (duration of the Plex item doesn’t match the sum of all parts) or clients not supporting stacked files (not all do that).

Okay, thanks for the advice – I’ll look into trimming and merging.
