Router needed?

This would concern all versions. Our router went out. It was defective. Waiting for new one. But wondering, is a router needed for remote access. When I try to connect, it turns green for short while, then goes down. I also changed my internet provider. My son trying to connect.
Thanks in advance

Without much in the way of details I can only offer generalities. If he is connecting via WIFI in the home them yes a router with WIFI (or a modem with WIFI) would be required. If he is remotely accessing PLEX then no, as long as your PLEX server is connected to the internet and your storage is directly connected to it.
It sounds as if your PLEX server needs its ports reset to account for the new non-router path, perhaps updating your OS firewall as well

If you don’t have a router, you have no internet, right? If there is no internet, how is your server supposed to deliver its streams to a client over the internet?

Thanks, Otto and grhiner. I finally found the problem. My router malfunctioned and Netgear confirmed it was a defective router. In the meantime, my son and daughter want to see some stuff I had filmed. Couldn’t get remote access. I found that AVG was the problem. So you can stream outside the home without a router. Can’t wait for my new one to come in so I can again have wi fi in my home
Thanks all
