Recently bought a new Samsung Smart Fridge, I know Samsung totally failed implementation on their part for building a functional fridge OS rather than just using Android or a full version of Tizen.
Irrespective of that, I want PLEX on it. tried the web app but wasn’t even able to log in… sigh.
Has anyone successfully got PLEX running on a Samsung Smart Fridge? I want to watch Gordon Ramsay while cooking and not need to drag my phone along for the ride.
Been using PLEX since it was a developer options on TV’s why should they? Because there are plenty of folks who have a smart fridges, its a known OS and likely doesn’t require months of development to port the current samsung app to work on the fridge, PLEX isn’t open source so I can’t go request developer access from samsung to get it done on PLEX’s behalf.
I’m a customer just like you and everyone else on here, so how’s about you settle down with the snarky responses Who seriously wants a half baked solution like gluing a tablet onto the fridge, nor do I want a TV shoved in the corner? I’m not 23 years old living in a rental.
I agree Samsung could have implemented their app store and overall solution much better to that point I’ve submitted feedback multiple times and spent several hours on the phone trying to speak to their product team about the lack of features it has.
@PLEX Developers, do you think you could look into building a PLEX app for the Samsung Smart Fridge?
It’s not snarky when its being blunt. I’m not going to sit here and tell you what YOU want to hear.
Literally every experience of every TV and any major and small electronics companies these days. From Best Buy’s Insignia brand, Walmart’s ONN brand to Samsung, Sony, etc. Again, these companies have a simple solution to your problem every time you actually call their support. Buy a newer model.
And on the topic of Samsung, even they have strict guidelines of OS updates for up to FOUR years. I personally don’t know how that affects the TV market in general but it cannot be good.
The refrigerator itself could probably hold for the standard 10 to 15 year lifespan but in that time, that OS and screen attached to your refrigerator will be outdated within under 5 years and that’s just one possible reason I’d stay clear in using Tizen on your Samsung fridge.
I personally would have thought having a standalone large tablet that’s not tied to the refrigerator and movable around the kitchen would have been a better solution since it can be replaced when updates stop.
Additionally, IF your model has a USB slot, there may be a way to side load the Plex.apk.
I think the presentation article I read about this fascinating device was a trade show floor model, back in 2016. So I’d hope that the issues they had (slow to operate, limited app selection) could be fixed now with more recent models, but… I don’t know. If they put in any kind of half-way decent processor in there, they’d be wasting money, so I bet they’d skimp and not provide anything that could decode video in real time.
… Though I did see them mention that they hoped it had a feature common in Samsung devices that let you stream the video coming from a nearby Samsung TV on the same Wifi. If they implemented that, then doing a video cast might be an option, playing a video on a Samsung device and casting it to the fridge.
Screen Mirroring is an option but not ideal due to lag and frame skips. Plus, Samsung makes it naturally difficult to do anything if you happen to be a iPhone or iPad user and unable to fling anything from one OS to another.
I have a Samsung phone and I refuse to use their extra services like Bixby and apps when I spend a great deal switching and using Google, Microsoft and Apple. I personally don’t understand the need to have Samsung have access to everything when they have a really bad track record with their apps as it is.
Tizen is said to be here to stay but for how much longer. A dumb refrigerator can last longer than any tablet or phone.
This is a valid and good point. Depending on the internal specs, the processor may not even be able to handle any of what Plex requires. I totally glossed over that but internal hardware specs do matter as well.
Considering the use case (Amount of users that would benefit from this) as well as the effort it would take for Plex, like having to get a lot of different fridges to test on, this sadly never would happen!
Sorry, but closing this, since out of scope for Plex
