A weird quirk with my system today; I added in a new Movie to my movies folder, clicked “Scan Library Files” as I normally do, but this proceeded to fetch new metadata for my entire movie collection (un-matching files, removing added posters and reverting to file names).
I was able to revert to a backup of my collection, but the same issue occurs after re-scanning (either manually or via the system settings).
Is there any advice or insight as to why this might be happening? I haven’t changed Scanner or Agents (both Plex Movie) or any other settings. Any help would be appreciated!
There is a change in the latest version of the server which helps to rematch things when file names are changed (to reduce the need for the Plex Dance).
The hints for your files that were stored differ too much from the current filenames so they get processed again. Your filenames are definitely going to cause problems here, I see everything is prefixed with Bluray - which will really throw off the matching. For example instead of us looking for a movie called The Report now we’re looking for something called Bluray The Report.
I would highly recommend you fix your naming first to prevent further issues. If you want to add additional information like “Bluray” then add that to the end of the filename in square brackets. For instance: H:\Movies\The Report (2019)\The Report (2019) [Bluray].mkv.
I’m going to look into your specific issue and see if there is anything actually going wrong there of if it’s just due to the filenames.
Ah yeah, that makes sense. The naming convention is a hold-over from when I started my collection back in 2010 and it’s just been the format ever since.
I guess the question is, since I haven’t modified the file names (outside of the Bluray - prefix added historically) and items were already matched within the library, did the new scanner think that all previous files were new, which is causing the problem? For example, the functionality worked as intended over the weekend when adding another Movie to the library.
But thank you for looking into this too. Hopefully it’s an easy fix (not wanting to manually find posters and junk for 1000 movies would be a plus)
In your case the library agent had been upgraded to the modern agent but the existing items (before the upgrade) were never refreshed so they were still on the legacy agent. This combined with the fact that all your movies are in one large folder and the strange file names are causing this behaviour with the latest server changes.
While I was looking at the issue I discovered another smaller problem which I’m pushing out a fix for too.
If you want things back exactly like they were you would likely have to restore from a backup then before you make any further changes to the movies folder, make sure you refresh the metadata for all the items in the library first so they get moved to the new agent.
When we scan in a item we store hints for the title and year (extracted from the filename), if we detect that the directory the item is in has changed we pass these files back to the scanner and if we see that the hints from the new filename are different enough we will ask that item to be matched again.
This logic has always been there but it was bypassed when we introduced the new movie agent as when people were initially changing to the new agent it would end up causing a lot of unnecessary rematching. The logic has been tweaked now and should result in a lot less bogus rematches.
