Scanning library takes hours just for a couple of movies/shows

The version before was also a beta version. I`m not sure what version (but not very old, since I update quite often)
I will try to find time and install the public version of PMS (maybe has to wait until the weekend).
I install the PMS in the “packet center” directly in the Synology (via web browser on a Mac).
So I am not sure what you mean with “originate on windows”.

I ask about Windows because, if you had migrated from Windows -> Synology then we would need take extra steps to complete the migration.

This is a new step because of how TheTVDB has changed.

Ah, okay. No, there was no migration involved here.
Let me add one thing (maybe it helps to understand the issue):
When the metadata fetching has stopped (after a long time) and I then try to add the cover and background manually (since the automatic fetching did not work for them) I can see the covers and backgrounds immediatly in the edit view. But when I click on save changes, then it again takes ages for the movie to update the cover and background.

I need to see the logs from doing this.
There are too many cases of problems.

Okay Chuck, looks like I found an (possible) solution to my and maybe also reap AND HaNeTheBerG problems.
Since we all (me included) use a new router (Fritzbox) it looks like we have to reopen the required ports again (see solution here: Agents are not working on my PMS on NAS)
I will check tonight, if this solves the problem.
Thanks for your help anyway!!

I will be here.

Let me know if you need further help.
If this does resolve the problem, please do check the correct box so others find it

It looks like it works now (I checked it remotely).
The only port that I had to open was TCP:32400.
Funny thing is, that I still was able to access plex remotely and also was able to stream content even before I opened the port. Only thing I noticed was the slow metadata catching and the missing covers and backgrounds.

How can I mark this as “solved”?

Port 32400 is only needed to access the server on your LAN (from other LAN devices) or via remote access.

Metadata doesn’t use 32400. It uses random ports (query/reply) as needed.

The 'Solved" box is under the horizontal ellipsis.

I kept my network structure. So

  1. Still the same
  2. Still DoH via Cloudflare
  3. Still the same (router models are quite the same, only difference is the modem: from DSL to Cable)
  4. No changes here, Router with integrated modem

Regarding the port forwarding: please don’t just mark as solved because I never forwarded any port to PMS as I never had to. I don’t use Plex remotely so there shouldn’t be a reason to forward any port at all. Especially because it worked before without.

I won’t mark this resolved; that’s for you to when you’re happy with the solution.

If you don’t need port forwarding then great.
You shouldn’t need any ports opened.

I will go read the Fritzbox manual and see if it has a ‘paranoid’ mode.
If it does, it may only allow certain type replies.

Same here. I changed the router model like I said before from 6590 to 6660 and upgraded my speed from 400 Mbit to 1Gbit.

DNS via Cloudflare.

TCP Port 32400 is open and remote access works.

Let’s try something.

In the Synology itself: Control Panel - Network - EDIT the adapter ->

Set the DNS go be Google 8.8.8.8 ; Refresh the metadata
then test with 8.8.4.4 & Refresh again

If this is unsuccessful, we point it back as it was (the modem)

I suggest this because Plex uses CloudFlare and has problems with it frequently.

Both addresses give the same not stopping spinning wheels like before :grinning:

Ok, Next level test – See if there is a corruption deep in the Database which is not detectable.

  1. Upper right corner of Plex/web - Sign Out.
  2. Stop Plex
  3. Rename Library to Library-KEEP
  4. Start Plex
  5. Open Incognito browser window
  6. Open http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web in the Incognito window
  7. It will want you to sign in - this is expected
  8. It will start the Setup wizard - this is also expected
  9. Start setting up the server EXCEPT
    a. When you see the Friendly Name - Assign “TEST SERVER” as the friendly name
    b. When you add a media section - Define only one section (movies or television)
  10. Continue through setup with all defaults.
  11. When you Finish and arrive at the dashboard,
  12. Open the Library section -> “Library” view so you can watch posters.
  13. Monitor the progress until everything is completed.

Report back please at that point.

Special Instructions

  1. If you see it is not matching well, STOP scanning
  2. Immediately download the logs and attach.

Alright, did all of it. Spinning as always, canceled and uploaded the logs.

It’s still returning error 403 (a more harsh Permission Denied) at Plex.tv

Can this wait until you and I do our session?

Sure thing. But can you name the log with this error in it by chance? I would like to check the address that’s unreachable.

The symptoms here are very similar to mine.
Plex running on synology
Update from Fritzbox 6590->6591 (docsis 3.0 → Docsis 3.1)
Metadata update takes very long. But mostly everything is loaded except for posters and cast pictures.
But the posters are selectable during editing, they are just not assigned correctly.
I have already tried pretty much everything (cache data deletion, plex dance, ports new etc.)

Everything can be read here:

Log attached.Plex Media Server Logs_2020-03-12_12-38-35.zip (6.0 MB)

Nothing changed, still not working, loading metadata takes forever.
