Season and episode number not being added to file names

Server Version#: Version 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#: web, also Apple TV (latest) and Mac Version 1.1.0.831-e1ae73b1

I have noticed that my shows are recording, but occasionally the filename is lacking the season and episode numbers and replaced with year/date as shown in this screenshot:

The misnamed files do not show up any of the plex clients. I read this unsolved thread without a good clue: DVR records episode / movie but it fails to appear in library - #12 by sa2000

Thoughts?

That happens if the season and episode numbering isn’t available in the EPG, so check the EPG in Plex, and if the numbers are there, then there’s an issue! But it should be using the numbers where they’re available, or falling back to date where it’s not.

I did notice that the problematic episode did NOT have an episode # in the guide. This never happened before the EPG switch this summer. Is there a fix for this?

There’s no specific fix for this, but you can report it here: Reporting Plex DVR Lineup Inaccuracies & Current Status

Im seeing this all the time. Is it still true the EPG is based on Gracenote and Metadata is based on TVDB? Seems like that’s going to continually cause issues.

Im seeing with late night TV recordings of Fallon, Corden, and Colbert. Colbert being typically the most FUBAR… See the date based file name, wrong season, wrong Episode number, and missing season folder (E.g. season 5 put into season 4)…

this was the thread that mentioned the two disparate data sources: DVR Recordings episode number and description do not match TVDB

The EPG used to be based on Gracenote, they changed it over to using another provider in July (think it is now Tivo)
Gracenote & TVDB used to match up, the new provider doesnt have the information for many shows, so just uses the current date when it doesnt have a S/E which fails to match with tvdb

This breaks things. Having 2 sources of truth is always bad. Would be better if metadata for DVR shows just came from EPG then. Now I get odd or no titles and no metadata at all - along with files being in wrong places etc… Example below of most recent recording showing up with a generic name and in the wrong place (it was placed in previous season folder)

This has been on ongoing issue with the new provider since it started, many similar issues, unfortunately they only get fixed when reporting via this form, the provider doesnt seem to work proactively and make sure the EPG is correct (I am in the UK and many of us here are suffering just as much)

Wanted to share I just started seeing this behavior as well. I posted about it here: [DVR] Friends doesn't have Episode info?

So far I’m only noticing it with ‘Friends’ but everything else appears correct across my guide. I’ve submitted my information here https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf0YIecSlA_pyZzmEttGeIT8ombGVJoIQB20Wa-YXHSv7vhhA/viewform

Hello

I am having the same issue in some spanish channels. Even sometimes withing the epg of the same channel it is once with and another without.
Not sure if it is coming from Plex or the Guide provider but it is for sure annoying.

Date is replacing episode information.
Hope it will be solved very very soon.
Thanks

We have been requesting shows to be sequenced with episode numbers where it has been requested and gives consistency with existing previous recordings that had episode numbers.

But both methods of identification of episodes are valid and identifying by date is not necessarily an error. It is just a different approach
