Yesterday I very suddenly started getting that “show can’t go on yet” message when trying to watch something from the very same computer that is hooked to the WD drive where all myshows are stored. I am using NordVPN because my house got a DMCA strike for downloading torrents but it was working just fine with the VPN for an entire week after I installed it, absolutley no changes to my setup were made when it started doing this After trying to fix it by logging out and logging back in it now has the red triangle next to my server name and tells me it us unreachable. I have tried reinstalling Plex Media server. I know absolutely nothing about things like how to check if my server and app are on the same subnet of the network or what to do if they’re not, somebody PLEASE help
I think probably more information is needed to help you.
- I don’t think anyone knows what “show can’t go on yet” means. Writing the exact error you get is useful. More useful is posting logs from your server or client.
- Does the hard drive work when you try to access the files directly outside of Plex? (I assume given the “unreachable” error this is a Plex issue and not a file integrity issue, but let’s check it anyway)
- Is the server turned on and running? What happens when you go to the Web UI on the server itself?
- Is the client you’re using on the same network as your server or not? If not, can you try a Plex client on the same network to see if this is a network issue or a server issue? I know you said you don’t know anything about subnets. That’s fine. Are you in a different physical building than the server you’re running or just in another room in the same house?
- What operating system are you running for your server? What about your client?
-
By “the show can’t go on” I am referring to the error that appears when you try to watch something in your library from someone else’s house without a plex pass.
-
Yes, I am able to access the files directly

The server is running according to the task manager. I don’t know what you mean by “web ui of the server itself.” It can’t be referring to Plex media server itself because that app always runs in the background and never actually opens when you click in it. If you are referring to the page I get when I type numbers into my browsers address field instead of typing “plex.tv”, it is exactly the sane as the one I get from typing plex.tv. I tried deleting the server and reinstalling plex media and no matter what I cannot get the new server to appear in the list of authorized devices, nor can I get a “claim server” option to appear anywhere. All methods that involve typing an IP addresses into my browsers address field either bring me back to the exact same version of the site I get from going to plex.tv or bring me to one of my browsers default error pages. I cannot use any method that involves preferences.xml because there is no file with that name in the folder where Google AI says where it would be located. If the reason why typing in IP addresses was bring up error pages is because I was using the IP for my house instead of the IP for the plex server, I have no way of knowing the IP address of the server because no “server” tab is appearing when I go into the settings on the site.

I don’t know what you mean by ”Is client you’re using on the same network as your server or not?” or “If not, can you try a Plex client on the same network to see if this is a network issue or a server issue?” The server I am running is located on the exact same computer where all if these issues started.

I’m on Windows 11. I don’t know what you mean by client.
All of my pinned libraries have disappeared. All of this happened because I was trying to fix the “show can’t go on” error and might have screwed things up further in the process. If that “show can’t go on” error ever happens again, how can I fix it without losing my pinned libraries?
By client, this is the actual thing you use to watch your media on.
- Do you open a web browser, type in (either) numbers or app.plex.tv? (This is the “Web” client)
- Do you click a Plex icon to run a specific program to watch things? (Plex-For-Windows client)
What I suspect might happen, if you changed nothing with your VPN, might be an issue that came out this last week, where Chrome blocks access to local devices on your network unless you explicitly allow it. Even if the server is on the same computer, even if the media is on a drive hooked up, the browser is unable to access the server if you block it’s “network” traffic. See this post for more:
Sorry to hear you’re locked out.
- Quit the PMS program on Windows.
- Follow this article: https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/
At the bottom of that support article, after you’ve deleted the four things it tells you to delete from your registry, you are told to claim the server again. So do these steps…
- Reboot the Windows machine to get it to read the registry correctly.
- Start PMS if it’s not started.
- In your Windows System Tray (bottom right of your desktop) you should see PMS is running because there’s a
>shaped Plex symbol. - Click that Plex symbol and choose Open Plex…
- You should be able to claim it.
The last steps 6-7 (lol) are described in detail in the forum document,
New Claiming Requirements For Windows, in the section titled
How Do I Claim My Server?
If you have problems claiming it, let us know.
Typing “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server” into windows explorer does not bring me to a folder. It does nothing but open a web browser with a “can’t find that page” error. How do I get into the folder with the 4 things I’m supposed to delete.
start → run → regedit
then drill down
