Server disappeared out of nowhere

Hi there,

Server just randomly disapeared from Plex, been running fine for 2+ years. No changes on the Synology Nas. What would prompt this? I’ve tried some of the troubleshooting steps with claiming server and nothing is working to get it to synch. I’ve opened Plex Media server from the Nas and does not pick it up.

What reference articles should I reference to resolve? Thanks

Synology model?
DSM 6 or DSM 7?

Plex Media Server version?

Is PMS running?

What happens if you connect to the IP address of the NAS, http://syno_ip_address:32400/web. For example, if the NAS IP is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/web.

A post was split to a new topic: Server Disappeared

Thanks for the response.

DSM220 - DSM 7.2.1xxxxx

PMS is running and is version 4.122.0

Logging directly into the NAS everything looks good and I see the Plex Media server there and folders, etc…all look good. It’s like there was no PMS attached to the Plex. I redownloaded it and now it’s pointing to a folder on my laptop. Not sure how to get it to point back to the NAS folders how I had it.

Make sure you did not inadvertently install PMS on your laptop. If you did, uninstall it.

The Plex server might be unclaimed for some reason.

Point a browser at the IP address of the NAS: http://syno_ip_address:32400/identity. For example, if the NAS address is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/identity.

If PMS is running, you will see a few lines of XML in the browser window. Look for claimed="0" or claimed="1". 0 = unclaimed, 1 = claimed.

If PMS is unclaimed, follow this procedure: FAQ 31: Reset / Reclaim PMS on DSM 7 (Not Authorized - Locked Out).

Then see if you can login and access server settings. Connect to the IP address of the NAS. Do not use QuickConnect, a FQDN, the “open” button in Synology Package Manager, etc.

If you still cannot access Plex Media Server, then:

  1. Stop PMS
  2. In Synology File station, navigate to the Plex Data Folder (/PlexMediaServer/…)
  3. Compress the Logs directory
  4. Download and attach to this thread.

That is the version of the Plex Web client.

PMS will 1.37.x.yyyy, 1.38.x.yyyy, etc.

It is normally visible in Settings → Server_Name → General.

However, since you cannot reach server settings, you can look in Synology Package Center.

Appears the claim portion of the instructions worked.

Thanks for the help!

Quick question, I did uninstall PMS on laptop as instructed however in Plex Web I still see it as a server. Should this be deleted/ is there a way to remove it from my account? Or just leave it?

On another note, everything with the library / metadata / organization is thankfully intact. Is there a way to back all of this stuff up should something unforseen like this happen again and there is not an easy resolution?

thanks again.

Good to hear it is back up and running.

If listed, remove it from your Authorized Devices: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms

Do not remove the entry for PMS on the Synology. That will put it in an unclaimed state and you’ll have to claim it again.

If you had any libraries from the undesired server pinned to your home page, you may need to manually unpin them.

FYI, it is perfectly fine to run multiple servers using the same Plex account. Many people do so.

Backup the Plex Data Folder (/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server) using Hyper Backup or similar application. You do not have to backup the Cache directory, which will save a bit of space.

If you do not mind re-creating thumbnails and such, you can just backup the Plex database files, in ..../Plugin Support/Databases.
