"Server not powerful enough to convert video" error message with a 10 core I7-6950X CPU?

Server Version#: 1.19.5.3021
Player Version#: Same
Hi all,

I had Plex working for years, suddenly this morning I could not play any video anymore and get this message weird message instead : Server not powerful enough to convert video.
Server CPU is a 10 core I7-6950X though…
Any idea what happened or does it just need like 50 cores to play some stupid video ???

Thank you in advance for your help,

depends what video you’re trying to transcode… I can imagine your CPU might not be up to transcode some high-bitrate h265 4K content. From what I can find, the CPU has a PassMark of almost 20k. That might just be enough for a single 4K transcode… regular h264 1080p content should transcode quite ok with that CPU.

Thank you for your answer. I did not think my CPU was so outdated that it could barely read/convert some video :frowning: What CPU would you recommend then ?
Anyway, I could read some 1080p TV show on my 4K Panasonic TV up to yesterday.
But today I get this message when reading the same files as yesterday.
Could something change overnight ?

Really, I do not see what changed overnight so I could not read any file 720p, 1080p or 4k anymore…
Is there some technical support I can contact or open a case ?

I would look into why it is trying to transcode in the first place. Your server logs should have info when the it attempts to start the stream.

Are all your quality settings set to max or original in the player? Possibly an IP address changed due to a DHCP lease being up and the server may think your TV is remote for some reason. Those are total uneducated guesses since i don’t know anything about your media files, which Plex player you are using or your networking set up. But you are right that if the same file was playing fine yesterday it should play fine today.

Hi, thank you for your answer.
All settings are are set Original on my TV. I tried a lot of different filles that I could read before and none are working today.
There is nothing I could find in the server logs but this :

web logs removed by mod

Please help :frowning:

Those are not your server logs. after you play something and it fails you can get the sever logs from the troubleshooting section of your server settings. There is a button to download them.

Oh, it is getting worse I cannot even watch a 720p video on the Plex server because it is not powerfull enough but log is too big 70k cahr while only 40000 are allowed, sp there is nothing I can do. I definitely need a tech support !

Have you tried to just restart your server or player if you are sure no settings have been changed on the server or player.

make sure this is not enabled as it will cause that error if the files do need transcoding. In your servers transcoder settings.

upload it as a zip or txt file. don’t copy paste the text content of the logs here

Plex Media Server Logs_2020-07-03_02-41-47.zip (6.1 MB) Plex Media Server Logs_2020-07-03_02-42-47.zip (6.1 MB)

I did stop/start the plex server over 10 times
I tried both checked and unchecked the disable stream encoding option and it is the same : The server is not powerful enough for any video that I read either on my TV or directly on the server.

looks like you are trying to play Knightfall - S2 E6 - Blood Drenched Stone. can you copy the xml for that episosde and paste it here. Info on how to do that can be found here https://support.plex.tv/articles/201998867-investigate-media-information-and-formats/#toc-1

Yes, this was the first attempt from the TV. Please find nellow the xml file :

I’m still looking at your logs. I forgot to ask which Plex app you have on your TV. if it is not a connected device like a Roku, which brand/model TV is it.

It is a Panasonic 4K TV with Plex for Smart TV 3.13.21
But the same thing also happens when I try to watch a 720p video directly on the server.
It should be on the second log file I sent you.

Did you just update the server yesterday or today? has it been failing since then? Would you mind downgrading the server to the previous build. You can get it here https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/ ( turn the “plex Pass download” switch to off so it downloads 1.19.4.2935)

to uninstall the current version go to apps control panel and uninstall from there. It, should keep all the app data, then install the 1.19.4 version.

I think this is going to take more investigation your logs are not making much sense to me and I am going to have to ask some others about it and I don’t want you waiting all night for me since it seems like it is around 3am for you.

I reinstalled the server in the many attempts to fix this issue. Therefore, it was already not working before. Anyway, I downgraded to version 1.19.4.2935 and it is still the same problem.
I am going to bed now because I have to go to work in 4 hours and I cannot spend the entire night on this matter.
I really want to thank you for your help though and I hope you solve this problem.
Best regards,
Bruce

Any news on fixing this matter by any chance ?
