Since moving my Shield from wifi to Cat 6 well over a month ago, I have not had a single disconnect. On wifi, Plex would show media unavailable all the time.
Bump
Same problem here, using new Shield Pro 2017 model with my Synology NAS. As soon as I set my Shield to sleep, Plex will tag all media/content as unavailable. Only a reboot will solve this.
Iām gonna try the theory now that this wonāt happen when the Shield goes to sleep mode by itself, but I have little faith in this āfixā.
/edit: Nope, letting the shield sleep by itself results in the same issue.
I guess my only option is to NEVER let the shield go to sleep⦠
Same problem here with Shield Pro 2017 and Synology DS216J
Every time the shield returns from sleep mode all media are marked as unavailable.
As I noticed I can access the DLNA of PMS via PC. Some of my movies were listed there. But just a few.
I am on the Nvidia Shield PRO 2017.
Set up the āaccess over local networkā to transfer my media files from PC to Shield. works like a charm till shield goes to sleep or is turned off. When I switch it back on, shield share is no longer accessible.
I have to fidget and disable / re-enable sharing manually to be able to access it again. this is utterly inconvenient especially considering I purchased the shield to decommission my older Plex server on PC.
This issue needs to be addressed through a software update.

Your Shield is connected over WIFI or wired Ethernet? If you are connected over WIFI, is it possible for you to plug it over wired ethernet just to see if that solved this issue? My Shield is connected over wired ethernet and I donāt experience this problem. Iām proposing this test just to see if this occur only when connected over WIFI.
Hi,
I am over wired Ethernet unfortunately. Plex service is still available even when Shield sleeps, but the share it creates which is accessible over network No longer applies.
Strangely enough, even if you reboot the device, the share is still inaccessible.
I am considering installing ES File Explorer on Shield, enabling the ftp server always ON, and transfering the files over ftp across LAN, though I would prefer if I would do this natively.
On another note, so you say that in your setup, the share \shield\internal is always accessible from PC even after sleep or reboot of shield ?
Yes, I have an external hard drive connected on the Shield and both, internal and my EHD are always accessible through network shares, even when the Shield sleeps or after reboot.
What is the plex server version you have?
I used ES File Explorer FTP server in the past because before nvidia firmware 5.0.2 (I have a Shield 2015), a plex server update broke the network shares. It works well. If you go that road, even though there is an option in ES file explorer to keep the FTP server on, you need to let ES file Explorer running in the background, otherwise, android kills the FTP server after a while. If you have an external hard drive, you need to give ES file Explorer write access to it otherwise, the disk will be read only for the FTP server. The good think is that, when you gave proper write access, the FTP server has full access to the disk, not only in the folder NVIDIA_SHIELD.
Same here
All my files are flagged āUnavailableā - but I have to dismount and then remount my external NASs (on the Shield) to get playback again - what a pain in the a$$.
BTW My setup is over Ethernet. I think the wifi theory is wrong.
Agreed, this is not a WiFi issue. On the Nvidia Geforce forums, I believe an tech support engineer replied in a related topic that they are investigating.
In short, SMB shares to and from external sources is very very very buggy.

Glad they are actually aware and investigating this⦠Have tried ES explorer and though it works, ftp protocol is a bit slow to transfer compared to direct network share⦠and you have to enable ft with each reboot. Would like a permanent + reliable solution.
@rouq Plex Media Server version : 1.3.4.3285 ⦠the latest build updated 2nd Feb 2017.
Reading some of the posts between wifi and Ethernet my thoughts were āWake on LANā with Ethernet helping to wake it up?
But possibly not.
When the device is on sleep it still is able to transcode and steam through Plex. So I presume that networking sharing should be available too.
The SMB problems are a known issue and Nvidia is working on a fix. No e.t.a. yet⦠I got this conformed via a support ticket, Iād suggest others file a support ticket as well to create more awareness and more input/details for Nvidia.
Roger that.
Nice to actually know they are working on this.
Thanks

Where do we do that, because this is getting ridiculous.

Good luck! They will probably reply very quickly and ask for some more information about your device.
Received the 5.1 preview today, installed it, but unfortunately the bug still exists:
As soon as the Shield enter SLEEP mode, all content in Plex will show āUNAVAILABLEā.
Only a REBOOT of the Shield will resolve this.
I got the 5.1 update too. The problem still occurs

Submit a ticket, gives them more to work with to solve the problem.
Just bought a new 16GB Shield. I am using a wired connection, with media on Windows 10 SMB.
Plex server worked out of the box, setup my libraries, watched a movie, and then watched TV after the movie.
When I went back to add another movie to the database an hour or so later, it showed the server as unavailable from my PC. All movies were marked as unavailable from the Shield (although Kodi shows all movies as there and were playable). Definitely a Plex/Shield problem.
I have reset the Shield back to default and now and still can not get the server to show up again from my PC (so I can add movies, etc). I have tried all above options and am exhausted!
I also have a Plex server installed on my PC which does show up and will play movies⦠only the Shield Plex server does not seem to work⦠WTF?
Will give it a few days to see if there is a fix, or workaround/kludge, but for $200 and being a Plex Pass member, it is not what I signed up for⦠will probably just return it. I really donāt need another project.
