Server unavailable when SHIELD sleeps

I came here because just like everyone else, I am experience the same random unavailable content. Very frustrating as I was hoping solid performance from my new NVIDIA Shield TV Pro 2017 version. Waiting for the applicable update and fix.

I happened on this post while searching for wake on lan info, and I just wanted to say that this ā€œUnavailableā€ problem has gone away for me, I think with 5.0. So there is light at the end of the tunnel, and hopefully Nvidia / Plex (ha) will get it fixed for everyone!

I am in contact with 2 support people from Nvidia, who both acknowledge the problem and they seem to be able to reproduce the problem and are working on a fix. For me, the recent updates do not solve the issue and I still can’t put the device in sleep mode, so it is always on. This isn’t a big deal but I’d rather have sleepmode to save a few watts

Chiming in with another ā€œme too!ā€.

For me however, all was working perfectly until a couple of weeks ago. Timing is suspiciously close to the new experience update - but I do recall a Plex update on the play store just after too, so not sure which is the culprit (likely Shield in fairness).

Now, anytime the shield sleeps all my media becomes ā€œunavailableā€ until a reboot. Don’t want to really leave the shield in a permanently on state. I am running the 16GB Shield TV connected to a ReadyNas 102 with WD drives in it.
Like I said, was working faultlessly until a short while ago.

Similar situation here. Things have been working good the past few months
since I have been on wired vs previously being on wireless and having tons
of issues. Now I get random unmounts from my Synology NAS. I have to re-log
in with username/password each time. Doesn’t want to survive a reboot
either. I downloaded the Plex database and migrated Plex to my old HTPC for
now for stability. Not nearly as powerful but works 100% of the time. Too
bad I can’t migrate back easily if this issue is ever fixed.

Been dealing with this since I bought the Shield last year. Remarkably frustrating. Just happened to me again now and I’m not home and have no way to reboot the Shield or remount the NAS. The Plex team should consider hosting the SMB like Kodi does to mitigate these issues

Please submit support tickets to Nvidia, they are aware of the situation, but I guess all extra input is welcome… I really hope this gets fixed cause I still can’t let the device ā€˜sleep’… :frowning:

Guess I’m lucking I do not have this problem, my shield sleeps all the time and my NAS stays connected

Same issue here…

Get the ā€œUnavailableā€ badge when I clearly have it in my library
Random server disconnect.

Bump.

Started this thread over at geforce forums, since support hasn’t been able to fix the problem, I am trying to get them more info. Please reply in this topic with your info, and submit support tickets to Nvidia to supply them with info.

I’m in the same boat as everyone else. Disappointed and frustrated. As someone said in an earlier post, I did’t want another project…

Since I’m also a heavy remote user, this bug is a killer. Luckily, I had a remote wireless plug lying around. I plugged the SHIELD into the plug thus allowing me to remotely restart the SHIELD.

Not ideal, but it works.

Here’s a Amazon link in case you’re wondering what I’m talking about.

Amazon.com : Electrical Light Switches

Haha, I did the same thing  But since it will lose the SMB every single time now in my case, I simply don’t let the shield go into sleep mode.

Please join the thread over at the Nvidia forums, hopefully we can create more awareness, since this isn’t a Plex bug I believe.

Support gave me this tip also but it didn’t fix anything for me :frowning:

UPDATE!

Good news. Thanks to the very helpful dev’s over at Nvidia, it now seems to work in my situation.

The problem:
I have my Shield connected to a Synology NAS, all via wired network. As soon as the shield goes into sleep mode, after 30 seconds Plex will show the content stored on the NAS as ā€˜unavailable’.

The fix:
Before I had my Shield connected to my network via UTP/wired, I used WiFi. There seems to be an issue with the Shield that although it is connected via UTP/wired, as soon as the sleep mode is activated the Shield will drop WIRED network en initiate WIFI, this causes things to f*ck up. The solution was to ā€˜forget’ the previously used WiFi network (by disconnecting the UTP cable, go into Settings > Network en ā€˜Forget’ the WiFi network), so that the Shield has NO ā€˜known’ WiFi networks.

This seems to work: it’s been about 24 hours in which the Shield has been through multiple Sleep cycles and it is still all up and running.

They’ll probably fix the issue soon, but for now the above ā€˜fix’ could maybe help others to!

Good luck.

Never used wifi and the issued occurred for me anyway.

However, this is concerning. If Nvidia support are throwing out red herrings like they did to mikkelnl, it means they are not even close to a solution - or even worse have not given this any attention contrary to what Nvidia has stated to other customers.

Give them some credit, this sounds a bit too harsh in my opinion. They analyzed my log files and found this issue, which will be fixed. That’s not to say that it is the only issue out there, so I might not work for everyone. I did for me - for now… Best advise is to submit your issue to them via support, and post in their forums - the mods helped me figure this out via PM’s over there.

But aside from their helpful support people, let me be clear; I do really feel the Shield has way too much bugs to be out there, which is unacceptable cause some are critical.

On the other hand at this moment the PMS bug for Shield (other thread) is way more annoying (not being able to play most of my h265 files).

@mikkelnl … Will test this and leave feedback.

My issue is that I want to share my internal nvidia shield pro storage to PC (where I download stuff) so I can transfer media. The shield network location just does not connect anytime the device sleeps. setting up the storage again is a pain as this does not re-establish the connection again without a lot of fiddling.

Turning off ipv6 totally solved this for me.

But now I have a new problem. My NAS (Drobo) won’t let me write to it over the network lol. Permissions problem. Mac finder keeps saying ā€œFinder wants to make changesā€

Not sure if this might help anyone, but I have both PMS and Kodi on my Shield. Kodi has a built-in screensaver. So instead of leaving the Shield on the home screen, I launch Kodi and leave. This seems to keep the connection to the drives/server alive.
