I did a full factory reset about a month ago and set everything back up including Plex. Since around that time, I have not restarted my Shield (that I can remember) and my Plex server has been available 100% of the time. No NAS dismounts or any other issues. I think the system updates over time caused some instability and the reset cleared it up.
IDK cause I was having the same issue but I noticed under Setting>Screen Saver there is an option for sleep. I put it at never so far so good⦠Maybe this was mentioned before I donāt know.
I had the issue right out of the box (Shield 2017, wired, libraries on Synology NAS).
I solved the problem by installing PMS from the Google Play Store on the web, instead of updating the app form the Shield Play Store. Since then, I always have access to Plex Server, even when the Shield is asleep.
Iām probably in the same boat. Have had the Shield for a couple of weeks. Most of the time when I click āServerā under settings it shows as not visible to the outside world. Tried manually opening a port in my router and that worked for a day or so and now it doesnāt. Not sure what causes it, rebooting doesnāt do the trick, sometimes enabling and disabling remote sharing works but that isnāt the scenario that I imagined when I bought it.
Itās been probably less than two weeks since Iāve had it. Shield updated to 5.2 recently (donāt know what it was on before). I opted in to the beta channel for Plex updates (seemed like I had to in order to get Live TV to work). I had it working this morning and according to Plex logs, about an hour ago when I logged in on mobile (to verify it was available).
Am I missing some limitation that exists? Not sure if I should be running something to keep it awake or pinging it constantly or something.
I know, thatās the main reason I bought the Shield (finally merging the Live TV with the DVR).
I did follow your advice in earlier posts - about specifying a public port of 46777 - and it worked but as Iām writing this I hit refresh on the Server page and itās no longer available.
Personally, Iām probably going to keep the Shield as a player/client because I like the way that it works with other apps (Hulu doesnāt freak out if I try to rewind or forward in increments like the Rokuās do). Itās not really a server yet in my mind, Iām not going to spend more money on a router and yell at my internet provider about it.

There are quite a few people having issues with remote access. I know itās being actively worked on by the engineers.

Hopefully they do. It seems like most of the time I have problems is when I am actually using it locally. Maybe using it as a local player and server at the same time is the issue.
Any updates to this? I have had a similar issue for a while now. PMS drops off and becomes unavailable after Shield goes to sleep. I have to āForce Stopā the PMS app in settings and then it will work again, that is until it goes to sleep. I have uninstalled updates, did nothing, reinstalled updates, nothing. Same issue. It sounds like itās either the app or the shield shutting down apps/processes when it goes to sleep.
Every 6 months or so, I run into this issue. I am wired to Ethernet, set to never sleep, etc. Just happens out of nowhere. The only fix that ever works is a full factory reset. Big PITA, but works. There are tools out there to transfer your watched status to another machine (temporarily) which you can then transfer back. THIS one for example.
I really donāt think its Plex related. I think its entirely about the way the Shield works on Samba shares. Maybe not your setup, but for me, I have all of my media on a Synology NAS. When this happens, I canāt even unmount the share without a reboot.
Over a year later and this problem still exists: whenever Shield goes to sleep at night, the next morning the files are unavailable. Note the FILES are unavaiable, Plex itself is available. Storage is on my NAS. I tried reconnecting to the NAS but that wonāt work, only a reboot.
Brand new shield that will not stay connected and is unavailable when device goes to sleep. Will be returning if the Stay Awake developer option does not work.
I was having that issue as well. Shield showing as unavailable at times. I didnt do a lot of troubleshooting but it was certainly I wanted to look at.
What I found yesterday is that if you enable Remote Access to Plex Server then I am able to see Shield Plex Server ok. For this you need to go to settings Remote Access and follow instructions (includes using upnp or opening ports on your router)
Hope it helps somebody
Just adding a ditto to the problem, got the shield running last night, building libraries, everything great. Wake it in the morning and server is running with no content in libraries. Trying disabling sleep now, but Iād like to see a response from someone actually with Plex. They recommended the damn thing to me on their website!
almost the same problem here. just bought the shield pro 2019. VERY DISAPPOINTING. I donāt play games. bought it to stream media!
Shield connected on router via WiFi
IP6 off
External SSD connected via USB to shield
Plex server and media on External SSD
When Shield is on, I can connect from PC within LAN on both internal and external drives and plex players find the plex server.
When shield is asleep, after a while, I cannot do any of these anymore. I donāt do anything. After a while, I can do it again. After a while, I canāt. This repeats over time. Access, no access, access, no access.
All work again when Shield if on.
I bought this as it is advertised everywhere that in can be used when asleep as a Plex Server. THIS IS NOT TRUE. PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THAT.
