Not sure how to do so on the Shield, but you might want to check logs and see if your DB was corrupted. Your experience sounds similar to mine at Home Screen No Longer Showing Local Libraries After Latest Update
Looks like repairing a DB on the shield (if that is the issue) is a bit of work though :-/ NVIDIA Shield - how to repair database?
