Sometime recently the Plex Web app started asking me to “Select User” when I connect to the PMS instead of defaulting to my main user account as it’s done for years. How do I undo this feature? Although my kids do have their own accounts they almost never use them and having to click my own (and only active) user profile every time I access Plex is annoying.
Settings - Web - General - ‘Automatically Sign In’
This restores the last logged in user upon next app start.
Careful: if you tell your browser to erase cookies and other ‘usage traces’, all preferences under Web will reset to their defaults when you close your browser.
There are also 3rd party apps which do the same (CCleaner etc)
Tell your browser to retain cookies and other data from the domains:
- plex.tv
- app.plex.tv
- webloader.plex.tv
- 127.0.0.1 (only when on the same machine as plex server)
- local plex server IP address
I’m using Plex web 3.1.1 from the Plex Pass update channel and ‘Automatically Sign In’ isn’t an option under the General tab (or any of the other Web settings tabs). Do I need to roll back to the Public channel?

How does your Web - General page look like?
Are you using any web browser extensions which manipulate web pages?
Odd, my screen looks the same as yours minus the option to Automatically Sign In. It looks the same with both Chrome and Firefox running on the PMS server. I don’t believe I’ve got any extensions that manipulate web pages but if I do they’ve been installed for years. Any more ideas?
Are you loading the web app from your local server
or from plex.tv?
Please try both.
Did you disable authentication on your server in general?
Take a look at your server’s hidden preferences.
If you see disableRemoteSecurity set to 1 , remove it.
So I tried both from my Web server @ localhost (127.0.0.1) as well as from plex.tv. Both gave me the same screen that excludes the option to Automatically Sign In. I also checked my server’s hidden preferences file - there was no reference todisableRemoteSecurity in it. My PMS is running on Ubuntu 12.04 but has been since 2012 / 04 or so so I don’t know why this should matter. As noted this started recently - maybe 2 - 3 weeks ago. Any more ideas?
It could be hidden when you don’t have any managed users, because it won’t needed then.
If you don’t have any ‘managed’ users, you don’t need the PIN on your account.
Simply remove it.

Thanks but I don’t have a PIN set to remove.

Support staff say you do.
Have you been to https://plex.tv/users/edit and checked?
I have - the PIN box is empty so whatever support is seeing on the back end is invisible to me. I also tried simply updating my account profile with the empty box and restarting the plexmediaserver service but it didn’t make any difference. Can support remove my PIN?
Is the ‘guest’ account activated on your server?
(Settings - Users)
No, guest is disabled.
It was suggested to me that this may be a caching issue.
Maybe signing out in the web app, closing the browser.

Then reopen the web browser, re-sign in should clear things up.
That did it, thanks!
This caught me too. I kept looking at the general page under Server, theres a general section higher up under PLEX, but below your account section at the top.
It should be the first screen that comes up when you hit the options button in the upper right.
