i would like to see a feature that scans movie collections and adds the movies in them to it’s collection. i think a lot if not most of us that have several or all movies to a series have them in a folder for that movie series, in my case i have 75 movie series each in their own folder. to create collections in plex i had to have folder view on, open the folder, select settings for EACH movie, select tags, and create a collection name. i personally see no reason why we can have a settings on the folders so we can tell plex to add all movies in this folder to this collection. then when you select collections in the view menu they are all setup. personally adding the collection tag to 75 folders versus 325 movies is far better.
See Collections.
I did not have to add/delete/modify any tags. I enabled collections in the library’s advanced settings and Plex organized everything. Ex: Grouped all Mission Impossible movies into one collection.
See “Collection Inline library display options” in document linked above.
I selected “Hide items…” Also, there is a checkbox for “Use collection info from The Movie Database” (not shows in picture, scroll down to find it).
When viewing the library by name I see:
When I open the collection:
just created a new folder, dropped copies of movies from 3 collections inro it, follow your instructions after adding after adding it as a library and when i clicked view collection i get told nothing in the collection. i view movies and it shows all 18 items.
Not sure. I enabled collections on two of my libraries and it just worked.
Some things to try:
- Follow Plex naming convention: movie_name (year).ext (Ex: Mission Impossible (1996).mkv)
If you do rename the files, be sure and perform the Plex Dance.
- Check Agents
In Settings -> Agents -> Movies -> Plex Movie, make sure Plex Movie is checked.
Click on the gear icon for Plex Movie and make sure “Use collection info from The Movie Database” is checked.
In Settings -> Agents -> Movis -> The Movie Database, make sure The Movie Database is checked.
Click on the gear icon for TMDB, and make sure “Use collection info…” is checked.
- Rescan the library. Sometimes it takes a second scan to pick up the collections.
That’s everything I can think of for now.
that last part “plex dance” is probably what needs to be done along with a lot of renaming. on a lot the movie is name exactly as it’s named on tmdb but the year in front of the title so they are forced into proper order, that said for myself since i already had all my created in plex i think i’ll just leave them as is since i’kk only be adding a new movie here and there to collections now. your help won’t go to waste cause my roommate hasn’t done his yes, so this will be of great help to him. thank
Collections are not automatically created from your folder structure.
They can only come from 3 sources:
- if you enable ‘Use collection info from The Movie Database’ in the agent settings, you will get a collection for almost every movie.
- if your files are in a mp4/m4v container and have content in the embedded ‘Album’ meta tag, they will get a collection named after the ‘Album’.
- you create them manually
thanks but FordGuy61 already did a nice job if explaining everything.
