Setting Up Movie Library

Would appreciate any advice. Currently I have a “Movies” folder in my Plex library with about 30 movies. Is it possible for Plex to read folders if I structure the library by movie type–that is, create folders within Movies for Sci-Fi, Drama, Fantasy, etc. and divy the movies out to the appropriate folders. When I look at this on my Plex mobile screen, I’d like to see the categories in the Movies folder and then select movies from within those folders. Would that work in Plex? I assume I should move everything out of the folder files, empty the trash, then create the folders in my Movies folder?

You can nest folders - to some degree - but it won’t make diddly-squat to Plex. Plex just puts them in the library. You can View By Folder, but man… that’s no way to run an airline.

If you want to set up Categories/Genres/etc., you’ll have to set up more ‘Libraries’ - or go through the pain and suffering of setting up and using ‘Collections’ and good luck with that.

I have 25+ Libraries (and counting) for doing just that. Currently it’s the way that makes me the least crazy when I go to look for something.

The Android Phone client does have a browse by folder capability. This would let you navigate your desired folder structure.

Personally, I use the browse by genre capability. You can tag movies so that certain movies appear together. For example, I tagged my Jason Bourne movies to appear as genre “Bourne.”

To navigate by folders, select the desired library. Then select “Browse” at the bottom of the screen, then the triangle item at the top of the screen. This will let you choose to browse by folders.

Right… with no indication what folder you’re in and if you have several folders you get a whole plethora of stock folder icons unmatched in ugliness. ‘Folder View’ was added as an afterthought when public outcry brought up the fact it was left completely out of these new Turkey Apps when that Turkey S*** hit the fan two and half years ago.

The fact remains if you’re Viewing By Folder - you’re doing it wrong. It’s better to use Plex the way The Plex Developers Use Plex, not the way The Plex Developers Hacked Up a Version for Users that couldn’t make the switch to the Plex Thought Process.

The above is, of course, my opinion.
Others may and likely will have different opinions.
