When playing remotely, Plex shows me encoding and playback in low resolution. The internet on both sides is fast and stable enough, the end device can play MKV video format. Playback is set to 12 Mbps everywhere and Direct Play and Direct Stream are enabled. Why is encoding happening and why does Plex tell me SD quality and 2Mbps? This happens to me on all remote streams. Thank you for the advice.
Unfortunately I didn’t find the answer there. I have no problem connecting outside my network, it works. I just don’t know why all remote streams are being encoded.
Most likely, your remote connections are only using a relay connection, because your server is not directly accessible from the outside.
Yes, apparently Plex works remotely for me via Relay. That’s why I have a 2 Mbps limit. Hopefully I’ll be able to get it working, I haven’t moved on with it even after 2 hours today. It still says “Not available outside your network” and “You are currently allowed remote access via a manually specified port.” (32400) Thanks for the links.
As for finding answers in the troubleshooting guide…
To what output have you tested the different steps?
e.g. –
- have you configured a manual port forward and are you able to see/access it from outside your home network (e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org)?
- do the WAN IP recognized from outside your home network and that seen in the router config match?
The failures during troubleshooting are also good pointers on where the issue might be. And sometimes remote access issues are outside your own control, e.g. if your ISP is applying some restrictions – sometimes they’re able/willing to address that.
By gradual elimination method and a little help from UI I came to the conclusion that my problem is so-called double NAT. I have a modem and a router connected to it and this may be the problem. I will try to set up port forwarding on both devices, or switch the modem to bridge mode.
Problem SOLVED. It was in double NAT. Now everything works smoothly. Thank you all for the help.
