Shane's Plex Problems

Hi everyone! Instead of coming and opening new threads everytime I can’t find a solution, Im just going to post it here in a single thread.. or at least until it auto closes. Anyway today I have had plex for about a week and here are the most annoying problems I am dealing with. Hopefully someone can shed some light on whats up!

I have dvr recordings set to record that just dont, without any error messages or anything. Shows up in the history logs on some devices in the recorded history, but completely missing from the logs on others using the same account. To compound the problem, some shows are recording without incident. I have 4 tuners so I know I’m not exhausting them, besides I assume there would be a flag on the logs if it did.

For example, I like jamie olivers 15 minute meals. It is set to record all episodes even reaired. this morning I was supposed to get 6 episodes recording from 8am until 11. Yesterday it was showing up on my schedule to record. This afternoon when I check, I have zero recorded episodes. I was currently on the xbox so I goto the history and sure enough there they are, all greyed out without any flags or warnings. Yet no episodes. I goto my mac to investigate further and it doesnt even show up in the logs. I just dont understand.. Arent all my devices following the server? How can it be on one list on one device but not on another using the same data? Look at these pictures, the first is the xbox and the skipped recordings, the second is the mac that didnt know anything about any recordings???

Once I understand why both devices aren’t reporting the same information, I will then have to find out why it didn’t record anyway.

It’s worth mentioning that while setting up and getting the app the way I like it, I changed the location of the folder for recordings a couple times as well as the name, and I had already set a few shows to record but I would just go back and change them after I got it how i liked it. That being said, by the time I was satisfied with my folder layouts, I had went back to the original setup as it was when I set the recordings. i.e. “e:/plex/recorded series/” was the original directory, I changed it around and played with different names, but then ultimately went back to “e:/plex/recorded series/” as the earlier recordings had been set to. I assumed the recordings would still be just fine since that was the same path as it was ultimately changed back to. I report all this because I am suspicious off the app not seeing the folder as the same, even though it is, maybe something binary about the folder. I am suspicious for 2 reasons. Last week I did see an event that failed and it had an exclamation. Said the correct folder for recording wasn’t found. I looked at the record options and it was in fact set to “e:/plex/recorded series/”. This was a one off show so I missed my chance to keep working with it, but then the 2nd reason happened which made me suspicious as to the first. I noticed my girlfriends jeopardy also hadn’t been recording, nor were they showing up on the logs. She had missed about 5 already so I verified that all the options and path were again set correctly, and when they were, I decided just to delete the whole recording and create a new on, but identically the same options as far as I know. The very next jeopardy recorded without incident! So I may have found the problem, but my common sense tells me I haven’t. Unless the app gives the downloaded folders a hash or binary identifier, “e:/plex/recorded series/” would be the same as “e:/plex/recorded series/” no matter how many times you delete and then add back that folder. So that leaves me here today deleteing all my timers only to reset them with exactly the same options. I hope that works, and if it does I hope the Plex people are watching and will investigate what is going on. I would love an official answer!

Next up on the list is super annoying! All my main menu sources keep defaulting when I log out, then back in. Do you understand how annoying it is to keep telling an app how I want the home screen laid out over and over and over and over. Set up the order I want it laid out then next login i get that stupid popup box asking asking you to select your sources like when its your first time ever logging on. This is happening on my Mac, my Xbox, my Rokus, and my iPads. Everything is fine an dandy until you have to log out and back in. Why cant these settings be set as a default on the server, and then you can change them on the device like the rest of the settings? I understand normally its not a big deal, but for some reason now that my settings aren’t staying set from log out to log in, It quickly becomes annoying to have to keep reordering and pinning the sources every single time a log out occurs. It also resets all the default tab views (recommended/library) for all the sources, maybe more settings that I havent discovered yet.

“Discovery” doesnt show up on some of my devices unless I go through safari to app.plex.tx. For example if I “Open plex” through the server on my mac (local host 127…), I get no discovery option even unpinned. IF i type in app.plex.tv in safari I get “Discovery” back. I personally dont use it, but it tells me most likely other features could also not be loading. I don’t even understand why its 2 UIs! I don’t think it loads on my ipad app either.

I guess this will be good for now, hopefully this thread wont gather any dust. Thanks to all who participate.

Include specific Plex Media Server version. Available at Settings → Server_Name → General or in your list of Authorized Devices. Do not say “Current” or “Latest.” That is not useful, as there are public & beta releases and updates may have been released around the same time as your post.

Also include Plex client version when applicable.

app.plex.tv loads the latest version of the web client, with the latest features, fixes, etc. Since it is hosted at Plex, they can update it as needed.

The web client bundled with Plex Media Server on your system is always a few releases behind the current version. It is meant mainly for server configuration, management, etc.

Support depends on app version.

Sorry man I just don’t understand or agree with your answers. I don’t think it’s useless at all to tell someone i’m up to date, or current, or whatever without knowing the specific build number if in fact they are up to date. I think most people try to update as soon as a problem occurs so to me it would be useless to go searching for a long number if you know you just installed it. I did in fact say I was in beta if you read my whole post, so with that knowledge you could deduct what software I’m on. And if I hadnt just updated my software that would be the first step anyways.

Thank you for the answer on the web client portion of my original post. Although I’m not sure about the plex client being a few releases behind. If its in beta especially, and up to date, what other releases are there? I understand that the web client could be farther along in development than the local client, but not how the app is “a few releases behind”. This to me can only be because it hasn’t been released from plex to include the new features. idk, maybe we’re saying the same thing in 2 different ways.

Either way I appreciate you taking the time to respond to the issues I am having!

As for recordings just not recording with no error log and no indication it was even supposed to record. I gave up long ago on this issue. If the HD Homerun has the slightest “hiccup” during recording, then entire recording can just disappear. Also, the recording can fail to start and then it will try again in a few minutes and you will loose several minutes at the start. A work around for this is to start the recording 7 minutes early. Like I said, no one has ever fixed or even addressed my issue and I have had Plex for at least 4 years.
My “fix” was to also get Emby. I run two different servers one with Plex and one with Emby. I have 8 tuners. Sometime Emby fails but it is rare. Some time Plex fails (this happens once every 8 or 10), but between them both I only miss recordings during very bad weather.
Sorry I do not have a great answer or a real fix. I’m just letting you know what I did to make my life bit better.

Apologies if my initial reply came across as harsh. That was not the intent.

The more detailed information you provide when posting, the better people will be able to answer your questions and provide assistance.

Regarding Plex Web & Discover:

My server is running Plex Media Server v1.26.2.5797.

The bundled version of Plex Web is 4.76.1.

The current hosted version (app.plex.tv) is 4.83.2

Per the Plex documentation, Discover requires 4.78.1 or newer.

So it is not a surprise when Discover does not work with the bundled version of Plex web on my server.

My test/backup server runs PMS 1.27.0.5889. The bundled version is still 4.76.1. So, still no Discover when accessing the server directly.

Thank you for your experiences, its nice to know that i’m not alone in this. I actually only discovered plex because HDHR sucks so bad I had to abandon it. I am a subscriber too! They are realying screwing up what use to be a decent platform. And if youre a roku customer, forget about it! As of today the lastest app broke live tv. That being said I do have to say that I am more suspicious its plexs behavior that is bugging out in this instance, at least for my case. I just feel something broke when I deleted the “recorded series” folder and then re added it back without deleting the old scheduled recordings and make new ones pointing to the new same named folder (I shouldn’t have to do that, it should recognize the folder as the same). So far every failed show that Ive deleted the schedule, and then readded it back has fixed that show. It is early still but it appears my hunch was right. Stay tuned and thank you for being a part of this!

No worries mate, you showed up and thats what matters!

“Per the Plex documentation, Discover requires 4.78.1 or newer.” was exactly what I was looking for, Thank you for showing me the reason it’s not uniform across the clients. I honestly still don’t understand why it isn’t though. This is supposed to be kinda user friendly. If I just downloaded plex media server, and then lauched plex, you would think I would get something up to date, especially when its supposed to be the most current beta. Unfortunately its not, and it seems to be missing a ton of stuff. The same with the plex app on ipad. I feel bad for the users that think that is their only interface available!

Anyways thank you for contributing to my thread!

Did anyone watch the video of the log out/in reset? Please someone tell me why that is happening? Maybe try it for yourselves and let me know what happens. Totally a PITA.

Stop your browser from clearing the cookies when you logout or better yet use Plex for Mac/Windows client.

If you remove a library and even though you recreate it with the same name you need to go to each of the scheduled recordings and reselect the library then resave. Otherwise it will think the library no longer exists. Removing a library also removes the history.

It doesn’t clear anything on exit.

The client sucks compared to the web app. I will double check and post back if the clients also do the same behavior. I do believe the roku and Xbox also had the same problem.

Wrong on the library. If I delete the library and then add it back, then go back to the recording the folder is still selected, just as it was, you can’t unselect it and select anything different. You have to physically cancel the timer, then find the show again and recreate it.
.

Thanks for trying!

Soooo… does anyone from Plex ever read these threads? I had assumed someone would be by here at some point to help since they refuse to do any support for their customers directly.

If a forum is the only form of support on Plex and it’s ignored by the staff then I’m definitely not gonna buy into it after the free trials up. I’m getting too old to have to figure out all these bugs all by myself!

Can’t explain what is in the video. I’ve only seen that happen when (a) the web browser will not let Plex set cookies, or (b) the web browser clears cookies.

My Mac is circa 2011, but I do not see that happening using either Safari or Chrome.

Regarding the Plex desktop client, suggest you take another look (download). It has the same layout as Plex Web, but is more full featured. It does not have the limitations imposed by web browsers and direct plays most audio/video codecs.

If your Mac has an AMD GPU, you need to edit the plex.ini file to make sure the app launches correctly. See this post for details: Plex for Mac - Player v. 1.44.0 - 1.45.0: Grey Screen on Startup (MacPro6,1 & 7,1) - #24 by BigWheel

Keep in mind I’m not closing the browser, just logging out then logging in. Even if my cookies were set to expire at exit I would be find during the same session, but just to be sure I just checked and I don’t even have that. Safari is set to keep cookies until I manually delete them, and block them is turned off.

My mac is the last model with standard usb. I refused to make the jump until devices started using usbc more than just apple products. Still waiting lol but I am seeing a few devices here and there start to support it so maybe in a few years.

I’m using safari to provoke the behavior, either from localhost or app.plex.tv. Did you try logging out and back in to see if its you too with safari, maybe its not just me?

I must say thank you for the tip about the mac client, you are 100% correct, and I apparently was doing it all wrong. Up until your comment I thought the localhost WAS the mac client. I would access plex either by going to the server in the menu bar and “open plex”… (Thats the ui I was referring to earlier when I said it sucks, same as old ipad mini). The link you shared is the actual client that I didnt know even existed, and updated to the better experience! Im thankful you mentioned this, I had thought it was built in to the server app this whole time. Its also worth mentioning that the log in/log out problem DOES NOT exist in the client Thank you sir for making my experience better at least on the mac!

My graphics card is a Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB, lucky plex works out of the box for me.

I have an RS, what about you?

So logging out of XBOX app also defaults all tabs back to default. This is super annoying is it really only me that has this issue?

And where is the support? Not a single Plex representative has spoken to me about any of my issues?

Am I really stuck to a community forum for help? There’s no technical support directly with Plex? I think I’m going to be checking out another option, plex support sucks!
