And when will hw transcoding work again?
Was this before the firmware update? I’m not aware of this being a problem. I can’t reproduce on my Android 9 Shield. Please point me to a thread of this was reported.
Cracks me up how everyone is writing this… i put this as a post in the Shield forum a while back and not one response.
While the Shield experience update along with the plex server update messed up permissions and other things… i’m sure in doing these upgrades some peoples server’s got turned off internally.
There is a bug in the client though that does not let you turn it back on. This is specific to the Plex Client and not the server. Its been like this for a while now. The option to turn back on is missing. You can verify this on a brand new install - upgrade the server, upgrade the client, server will be running, stop it, close the client, go back in, and now no option to turn it back on
When you say beta channel, are you referring to being in the testing program for plex media server beta on the google play store?
This thread is related to the transcoding issue I believe.
Yes. The app description will say “(beta)” if you are in the program.
These are all on the first page filtered for server-nvidia-shield.
I can’t remember in my case if it still showed hw when transcoding still but it definitely started choking on files it was fine with prior to the point of not being usable while transcoding.
No it’s not. The client app just starts PMS if it is off. If you can’t start it, then there is a problem with PMS.
upgrade the server, upgrade the client, server will be running, stop it, close the client, go back in, and now no option to turn it back on
If you don’t get the option to turn it back on, it’s likely PMS did not shut down properly. I tried your steps and could not reproduce. PMS stops and starts properly for me. There is a dialog that appears while PMS is shutting down or restarting. Do you wait for it to complete?
I guess my only question is, should we expect the Beta update today, or after the weekend?
My Plex Server is far too broken at the moment to put up with it much longer. And some of the issues smell like things that might not be fixed by a semi-quick Plex update, and may be related to the Nvidia update itself.
I’m thinking that reverting to the previous Shield firmware is likely going to be my weekend project.
Yes absolutely i wait. I have been having this problem for months now and at least i have gotten the backup/restore down to a science - thankfully or i would be so disappointed after all these years
Having said all that. I dont know after the Shield 9 upgrade but this was how it was reproducible for me and how i feel its purely a client issue:
- Reset the shield back to original (again prior to Shield 9, cant speak to it now)
- You have the really old client and server
- Set up a brand new server when starting Plex (let it default to the all the folders etc)
- Go in and upgrade the server (not the client, so make sure auto update is off on Shield).
- If you go into Plex, with the really old client and you go into settings you can Start and Stop the server, and i dont mean just at that moment. You need to close (crash out) the Plex app and then go back in, the option always remains (again a brand new server - no files or anything).
- No go in and update the Plex client in the app store
- Go in to Plex and try to repeat the same (if the server is running, stop it, and its a clean stop to your earlier question)
- Make sure while it is stopped to crash out the app and relaunch a new instance of the plex client. Go back into settings and now there is no options under the Plex Media Server area in settings.
I’ve gone thru this so many times (mostly because i upgraded my shield, and then my hard drives) and it is absolutely reproducible. and i dont think it is a PMS issue as why was the old client able to do so without any issue?
Perfect I am in the beta program on google play!
That might explain what goobered my PMS last weekend. I stopped PMS, then updated both PMS and the client to the latest releases from the Play Store. I may have then rebooted Shield. Launching the client, the option to start/stop PMS was gone.
That’s what prompted me to rebuild everything from scratch, which worked… except now transcoding is broken in the latest PMS.
Note that I have not updated to Shield 9. All of my problems are related to recent releases of the client and/or PMS. I realize this isn’t relevant to the thread topic, but it seems all recent updates to Shield, Plex client, and Plex server have introduced various serious problems for PMS users. It’s one thing for certain quirky bugs to exist, but these releases have caused loss of core functionality.
If folks are not already aware, there are important caveats to the nVidia hotfix process (this is from nVidia’s hotfix page):
- There is no way to roll back from the HotFix.
- The HotFix is per major release build. If you sign up for this HotFix, you will receive all updates to it until the next major release and that’s it. If you want to partake in future HotFixes, you’ll need to join them as they appear.
- There is no way to leave the HotFix process once you join it but you can ignore updates to the HotFix images if you don’t want to install them.
- When the next major release drops, you will receive it like usual.
- HotFix images are not Google certified. The next official release will have all certifications. The negative side affect we’ve noticed from this so far are listed below and others may appear as time goes on:
a. You won’t be able to install or update Disney+ from the Playstore if you haven’t installed it yet or do a Factory reset on this image.
b. HD Homerun DRM channels will not work.
Same here,
after the update of the Experience 9 upgrade, my plex on my shield pro doesn’t work anymore. it says my library is empty. I use a NAS for my movie and it works perfectly with VLC. i can access it without problems.
Need a really quick fix really fast
just downgrade plex android app on shield to 8.23.1.28053
i have updated shield too
but with this version. no problem so far. i use this version on all my android since early october 21’
It’s not going to do anything. If it doesn’t start with an empty library within 10 seconds, it’s not going to.
I figured as much. I gave up for now, until there is a fix. Thanks
I also reported it today.
Actually, it is easily reproducible, just update PMS for me and go back to the client and if for any reason I need to restart PMS then the restart option disappears. Only fix is to uninstall client and server and start again.
Mine is working again….
I can’t select the connected external USB HDD in the Plex app…but I can set up my Plex server in a browser and choose my USB HDD there to point to my movies/shows.
Did a fresh install of the shield an gave permissions yesterday. Today I could make it and the server is running. Donno why and for how long…I hope they bring a good update and everything will work for a longer time normally
