Same boat. Saw it once after one of the reboots, but not after trying the steps of restoring my old server instance.
Once I shut it down, I have no option in Settings to turn PMS back on.
This was after getting the nVidia hotfix, sideloading the linked APK, and reformatting my USB to FAT32 and then NTFS (to see if the result was different).
Shield and Plex can see the USB stick and move the library, but the settings to turn the PMS back on are missing. I force stopped PMS and then after a reboot I was able to see the settings, but manually turning the PMS on didn’t do anything.
It appeared on the shield, but not in my Plex client on the web. When I rebooted next, the PMS settings were gone and still couldn’t find the Shield PMS on any of my clients.
I tested using a usb drive formatted to exFat and I see the same issue without the NVidia Hotfix. If you are using an exFat drive for the data folder, you will need NVidia’s hotfix.
My USB (SanDisk) is exFAT, and not able to be detected via PMS to modify to USB as storage location. Assuming the link is hotfix for fat32 drives. Any resolution for exFAT USB drives?
Also, sorry for sounding like a noob, but how do you install the hotfix??? I don’t even understand by ‘sideload the above over the current PMS’.
FYI, I’ve managed to reinstall my PMS, but had to do a factory reset of my Shield, and providing ‘Allow’ permissions to the Plex and PMS apps under settings. But now I cannot use the PMS library in my USB, it won’t get detected.
To be clear, to get the hotfix, you sign up using the google doc link mentioned above. This foes straight to NVidia. They will enable your device to receive the hotfix. This will appear as another firmware update on your Shield. You load that like you did the 9.0 firmware.
Ok so once the firmware update appears, I just load it like the 9.0 firmware. Do I need to ‘Sideload it over the current PMS’? Sorry, I don’t understand what this means.
The firmware and installing PMS are 2 different things. You do the firmware first. Then you update PMS with the file I linked above. Sideloading means to install an app manually, not through the Google Play store. There are several ways to do this. Please Google and see what method you feel comfortable trying.
If you don’t feel comfortable doing that, wait for that update to become available in the Play Store. Hopefully sometime next week.
im still on android 9 and my shield is connected to an external hdd. My PMS is on shield and retrieve shows/movie from the external hdd. Given the updates above provided, can i update to android 11 shield experience 9 and sideload the plex apk without installing shield hotfix?
What is the compelling reason to install Android 11 on your Shield?
Is there a new feature or fix that you simply cannot live without and must have right this very minute?
If the answer is “none,” then wait.
Is the Shield your primary, or only, Plex Media Server?
If the answer is “yes,” then wait.
Android 11 on the Shield has been out for all of three days and there has already been a hotfix. Based on past releases, there will probably be others. The Plex Media Server has been out for just a few hours. Early reports are promising, but there may be problems that have yet to reveal themselves.
Let everything bake for a week. Or three. See if any other issues crop up necessitating new releases from Nvidia or Plex. Once things are stable for several days, then update.
I have PMS on shield and media on external NTFS drives connected to shield. I have updated the permissions to always allow.
I have installed the shield hotfix and also PMS hotfix and still I have no connection to the server (tried both with client on shield and via PC). I have tried to reboot a few times and also power off but still nothing. Most users in this thread appear to have PMS and media on external drive but any others with the same setup as me still encountering issues? Im trying to avoid resetting my PMS but it seems this is my only next step unless I’m missing something. Any advice is appreciated.
I’m reading most people are having problems with shield exerience 9.0 and lastest PMS with their externe USB configuration.
On my case I have the same problem but withthe configuration on the SD-Card.
It’s formatted by the shield itself but as external drive (not fused with internal space).
I did not install 9.0 hotfix as I don’t want to loose Google certification for applications.
I installed latest PMS (hotfix 1.25.3.5410) but still no luck even after un-pluging power.
What’s still lacking ?
Any chance of getting an approximate ETA on when the update which fixed the external drives not detected will be available from the Google App Store for those of us who don’t want to side load?
I gave up at 1:30am and came back to it this morning. The Hot fix was required and the updated PMS side loaded. I needed to wait a while for the hot fix to arrive from NVidia after filling the Google form.
As I’d cleared the server cache/data during earlier repair attempts, I needed to go through the list of unmounting, renaming the data directory, etc from the above list of actions to perform.
All good again now.
I’ve also turned off auto updating of the Shield so that I can delay updates until I know that it hasn’t broken anything first.
Are there any files on my Nvidia Shield that I should backup? I have all of my media on an external hard drive, but I’m worried that I’m going to lose all of my server customization settings in all of this. I guess I’m also a little worried about the external hard drive, but at least not as much.
Hitaku If you are referring to the PMS libraries, then you should save the folder ‘com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb’, which stores all your metadata for your PMS libraries.
