reinstallation of plex server is as new installation of plex server
so you will need to re-assign your libraries
old plex server you can see but without connection to it so you can delete it
which issues, can you clarify i’m just hoping to get the external USB (NTFS) data storage for PMS fixed?
Anyone with an external USB NTFS HDD try hotfix 1 for 9.0.1? Is it stable?
I installed X-plor file manager but it didn’t give me the option to delete PMS. And now it’s back to the point where it’s saying “setup failed, something went wrong”
you need to find the place where pms is located
go to x-plor - App manager - Installed - Plex Media Server (delete this file)
Looks like Nvidia removed all the power optimisation and storage permission settings introduced in Shield Experience 9 - so is this technically a rollback ![]()
It worked for an hour or so before the PMS disappeared entirely from the settings. I have to do another uninstall/reinstall/sideload etc and then rebuild library. These are all unnecessary if these 2 companies will just release something that works. Shield/Plex worked perfectly before update to Android 11… if it ain’t broke, leave it alone.
You are not alone, nothing was fixed with regards to Plex Media Server. I finally was able to get PMS to work for maybe one hour before it crapped out again and PMS completely disappeared on me. The waiting game continues.
Was broke after 9.0.0… seems to be working again with 9.0.1… it’s only been a day so time will tell, but so far so good. No hard reboots needed yet.
My setup:
Media storage - NAS over smb share mounted on Shield
DB storage - exFat formatted usb stick (not adopted)
I’m planning on moving db storage to an adopted Samsung T7 when that gets delivered, but for now things are working.
Another report.
Preface - My PMS is installed on an external NTFS formatted HDD. I have 2 identical Seagate Expansion 4TB connected to both USBs (both are set to be always on, even when the Shield sleeps). I don’t have Plex Pass, so I don’t know about HW transcoding.
Installed the officially supplied 9.0.1. two days ago (haven’t used any hotfixes previously). Plex ran normally after the update for a few hours. In the morning it had crashed and I had to power cycle the Shield (settings menu became completely broken and wouldn’t open so I had to pull the plug). Couple of hours later during the day it crashed again and had to reboot again (this time normal reboot from the settings menu). I ended up disabling all automated library scans, everything. I’m now scanning manually from the android client app on my phone when I need.
PMS has been running without any issues for some 36 hours now without needing to reboot or having any problems playing/seeing my stuff. So far this is the most stable my setup has been for the past month or so.
2019 Shield Pro Setup:
Media storage - NAS over smb share mounted on Shield
DB storage - NTFS formatted usb stick (not adopted)
DB backups - 2nd NTFS formatted usb stick (not adopted)
On Shield Experience 9.0.1+Hotfix
Good so far after 12 hours of uptime, with no hanging due to use of NTFS external storage.
Put it through its paces by having scheduled tasks run to completion within a 6-hour window (12am - 6am), mostly deep media analysis. No crashes, no hanging.
Putting through its paces again by having it run through scheduled tasks for a 19-hour window (11am - 6am). So far it’s completed DB optimization and is continuing with more deep media analysis.
9.0.1+Hotfix looks very promising so far for resolving NTFS external storage hanging issue. Keeping fingers crossed.
Here’s hoping. I can live with the slow samba transfer speeds until they figure it out, but the exFat storage going offline and apps freezing is a must. Going to be away for a few days next week, so I’ll be seeing if I can use the server remotely now and keep it up.
Before the fatal date of the initial update, where life was good, I had pms db in internal storage and backup the entire plex media server folder using win10. The fatal horrible experience, got internal storage android/data… plex media server unacessible using win10, so, changed the pms db to external storage using an old backup… with this last update… I can access the internal storage again using win10… but no longer can access the external storage where I last placed pms db… nvidia must be joking…still…
Had several freeze situations… so…is it solved? NO WAY!!!
Shield Experience 9.0.1+Hotfix was a DOWNGRADE for me.
Before I could theoretically setup and use Plex, sluggishly, though scanning libraries crashed the PMS or all of the Shield, network connection to PC was crawling, and restarting the shield never brought PMS back (I always had to uninstall/restart/reinstall/restart to get it back).
Now, with Shield Experience 9.0.1+Hotfix I was able to install PMS and have it initially show up in the Plex app settings but I cannot change the PMS location to my 8TB WD external HD, any longer.
I did check permissions on Plex and PMS (both defaulted to “NOT ALLOW” and were changed to “Allow while using” (the only other option) but the same problem persists.
What an absolute genuine cluster#@& this has become.
Might be time to just move to a Mac Mini as a media server and cut ties with Google / Shield entirely.
When the hotfixe went public and I downloaded it a day or two ago I was so happy that my server was back. However, today it has disappeared again for no discernable reason and again doesn’t show up on my shield.
This is such a disappointment and the main reason I paid for plex pass and my shield was for a working server.
I would not recommend anyone buy a shield or plex pass right now
@anon18523487 - I don’t think the issue is fixed with latest update as at 15/Feb/2022 at least for 2017 Shield P2897.
- Installed 9.0.1(33.1.0,283) update.
- Factory reset Shield (12th time in last 3 months)
- Connected to LAN via cable.
- Went through setup wizard.
- Updated all apps.
- Setup SMB login to Synology NAS.
- Setup PMS using wizard with default libraries.
- Formatted external SSD as “removable storage” using Shield format feature.
- Moved PMS data to external SSD (Samsung 1TB SSD T5)
- Edited default “Movies” library with path to NAS and settings to reflect localisation and some other minor settings.
Libraries starting scanning but after 30 minutes Shield became sluggish and PMS was not accessible from web. Eventually Shield crashed/restarted.
Monitoring it, the scanning of movies stops/freezes. Progress circle is stuck half way and no new logs in Console.
During this time, if I navigate to Settings > Storage > the Shield crashes. I am sure there is still an issue with accessing USB drive as before.
I’m still seeing the same issues.
Any updates? Im getting hanging and same issues with the latest update with same setup as you except its a 2017 Shield…
Still going strong after 21 hours 41 minutes of uptime. It continues to be running deep media analysis as part of the scheduled tasks. that started around 10+ hours ago (a little more than halfway through the scheduled 19-hour maintenance window). PMS remains up and accessible.
Noted that PMS was briefly “unresponsive” while it was performing the DB optimization task. That took about 35 minutes. I could tell it was still running during that time by looking at the logs.
Did your Shield get the 9.0.1+ Hotfix? That is what made a difference for my Shield because of the use of NTFS on USB drives. You have to sign up for the Hotfix again after installing the 9.0.1 official release.
didn’t realise I had to re-request the hot fixes after an official update - thanks.
Are you using a NAS to store your media?
